Pan Ocean launching new service connecting Guangzhou and South Korea

Pan Ocean and the port of Guangzhou have launched the direct shipping service linking the southern Chinese port and South Korea. The new KSC service will be operated exclusively by Pan Ocean on weekly basis. The port rotation is Nansha-Shekou-Shantou-Inchon-Ulsan-Gwangyang-Busan-Huangpu-Nansha, which is the second direct service connecting Nansha and South Korea, and is the fourth direct shipping route from Guangzhou to South Korea. The opening of the new service will further improve export transportation from western region of Pearl river delta to South Korea. Currently, Guangzhou port operates 163 container liner services, including 119 export routes.

Guangzhou Port accelerates 5G intelligent port construction

The southern Chinese port of Guangzhou is promoting the intelligent port development with several industry players at Greater Bay Area. The port inked a letter of intent for 5G intelligent port application innovation cooperation with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), China Unicom Guangzhou branch and Huawei to form a research team and set up 5G intelligent port united application innovation workroom. The four parties will jointly develop Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s first full automated terminal and 5G application demonstration project at the fourth phase of Nansha port area. “As a leading global automated terminal solution provider, ZPMC will devote every effort to cooperate with Guangzhou port on the development and construction of this 5G intelligent port project,” said Zhu Lianyu, chairman of ZPMC. The cooperation will be able to accelerate 5G intelligent port technology’s replication at domestic and global ports, according to Guangzhou Port. Last year, Guangzhou port, China Unicom Guangzhou Branch, Guangzhou Xinyidai Communication and Network Innovation Research Institute and Huawei established cooperation to set up 5G innovation center for port development.

Sinopec Guangzhou refinery produces first batch of VLSFO

China’s state-owned oil firm Sinopec has confirmed that its Guangzhou refinery has started producing very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) for the shipping market. Reuters reported that a 1,600-tonne cargo was Guangzhou refinery’s first batch of VLSFO production, delivered to a storage tank at Sinopec Fuel Oil Sales Co via pipeline. Sinopec said the VLSFO at Guangzhou refinery is a blend of residual oil and diesel. The parent firm Sinopec had announced in June last year that it intends to ramp up VLSFO production capacity to 10m tonnes and 15m tonnes by 2020 and 2023, respectively. The need for ships to use VLSFO follows the IMO 2020 global regulation that mandates all ocean-going ships to burn marine fuels with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5%.

First direct container route between Guangzhou and the east coast US

Maersk Line, MSC, ZIM, Hamburg Süd, and Hyundai Merchant Marine have added the first direct connection from the southern Chinese port of Guangzhou to the east coast of the US. The ships will call at Nansha port of Guangzhou each Monday, and arrive at Newark Port of the United States in 32 days, and Charleston Port in 37 days, with the lines twelve 8,200-8,500 teu containerships. This new route to the east coast of United States will provide a fast and direct shipping service to the clients, said Guangzhou Port Group. Guangzhou port is one of the busiest ports in South China. As the end of August 2019, Guangzhou Port Group operates 154 container liner services, including 109 foreign trade routes and 45 domestic trade routes.

TS Lines orders four boxships at Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong

Taiwan-based TS Lines has inked a newbuilding contract with CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding for two plus two 2,700 teu boxships. The boxships are designed by SDARI, will have a length of 188.8 metres, a breadth of 17.1 metres and a draught of 9.5 meters. The vessels, fitted with scrubbers and will be classified by ClassNK, having the advantages of low fuel consumption and large loading capacity, which are aimed at supporting TS Lines to further improve the competitiveness in Asia market. The boxships are due for delivery starting from June 2021. Last year, Huangpu Wenchong inked an order twelve 2,038teu boxship orders with another Taiwanese owner Wan Hai Lines. The first vessel will be delivered in January 2021. Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding is the main production base for naval vessels, special engineering ships and offshore engineering in South China. It currently has two main production bases in Changzhou and Longxue.

Huawei and Guangzhou setting up 5G port innovation centre

Huawei is working with city of Guangzhou to develop 5G mobile technology for ports. The Southern Chinese port city of Guangzhou is to set up a 5G Port Innovation Center at Great Bay Area under the strategy cooperation agreement signed among Guangzhou Port Authority, Guangzhou Port Group, China Unicom Guangzhou Branch, Guangzhou Xinyidai Communication and Network Innovation Research Institute and Huawei. According to the agreement, the five parties will jointly develop 5G technology for port and sea areas and accelerate 5G application on Guangzhou port and Great Bay area. The 5G technology will be used in port alerts, auxiliary navigation, intelligent cargo handling and other sectors. Guangzhou port said that it will take this opportunity to promote its 5G intelligent port construction and strengthen the competitiveness of the port. Guangzhou and Rotterdam ports join hands

China’s Guangzhou port signed co-operation agreement with Port of Rotterdam Authority to establish sister-port relationship. According to the agreement, the two parties will be sharing expertise and best practices in the field of port management. Chen Hong, director of Guangzhou Port Authority said that Guangzhou Port will co-operate with Port of Rotterdam to strengthen talent training, open new shipping routes and promote green intelligent port development. This partnership is in line with the Port of Rotterdam Authority’s strategic goals to share its knowledge and expertise with ports around the world and establish itself as a frontrunner in the development of new markets, the port of Rotterdam said. The Port of Rotterdam has previously established partnership with other Chinese port cities of Shanghai and Shenzhen. Guangzhou is one of the busiest container handling ports in China, achieving a throughput of 18.785m teu in 2018. The port operated 148 container shipping routes as the end of 2018 including 103 routes for foreign trading.

Pangaea Logistics orders bulk carrier pair at Guangzhou Shipyard International

Global logistics solutions provider, Pangaea Logistics Solutions, inked contract with Chinese shipbuilder Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) to build two post-panamax 95,000 dwt dry bulk carriers plus options for two more vessels. The new ships, built at a cost of approximately $38m each, are Pangaea's first newbuilding order in China. Ed Coll, chief executive officer of Pangaea said that the ship design was a fuel efficient one, making it competitive with non-ice class vessels when not trading in ice, and the ships would comply with all Polar Code requirements for safety and environmental demands, said. The two bulk carriers are to be delivered in the first half of 2021 and will be deployed for Pangaea’s ten-year contract with Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation for service in the Canadian Arctic. Pangaea Logistics Solutions provides logistics services to dry bulk cargoes, including grains, pig iron, hot briquetted iron, bauxite, alumina, cement clinker, dolomite, and limestone.

Cosco Shipping Ports to build mega logistics park at Guangzhou port

TERMINAL operator Cosco Shipping Ports (CSP) plans to develop a 254,000-square-metre logistics park in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou that has a regional population of 64 million and boasts one of the world's busiest box ports with 2018 throughput hitting 21.92 million TEU. CSP signed an investment agreement with the Guangzhou Nansha Economic and Technology Development Zone Commercial Bureau, which operates the Nansha free trade zone and includes a 15-square kilometre port cluster, the majority of which is situated on Longxue island in the Pearl River Delta. Scant details are currently available, however, it appears from the comments made by CSP that the logistics park will be built next to the Nansha box terminal on Longxue Island, New York's FreightWaves reported. CSP wants to develop a "supply chain platform" for high-end warehousing for businesses including cross-border e-commerce, auto parts and accessories distribution, fresh food and cold chain for pharmaceutical products. CSP managing director Zhang Wei said that the development will be a new growth driver for Cosco Shipping Ports. "Cosco Shipping Ports' investment in port supply chain project in Nansha heralds the company's initiative to take advantage of scarce logistics resources near the port and develop high-end warehousing business." Mr Wei continued: "Compared to traditional simple warehous(ing), this high-end warehousing project near the port is irreplaceable and has a higher plot ratio and more scientific and efficient warehousing space. Located behind the container terminal, the project enjoys (a) good location, strong synergy effect and low transportation costs." The Nansha port area is the main port of Guangzhou. It comprises 16 container berths with a 5,718-metre quay length and 61 quay cranes that have the ability to handle ships 23 rows across. The channel depth is 17 metres with a width of 243 metres. The terminal also has 57,600-square metres of on-dock warehousing and 63,000 square metres of off-dock warehousing. In 2018 Guangzhou port handled 21.92 million TEU, making it the fifth busiest port worldwide after Shenzhen with 25.74 million TEU. As of December 31 2018, CSP operated and managed 283 berths at 36 ports globally, of which 192 were for containers. The company said it handled 117.37 million TEU last year, an increase of 17.1 per cent over the previous year on revenues of US$1 billion, up 57.6 per cent year on the back of the completion of acquisitions and the consolidation of revenues.  

Guangzhou Port moves forward on provincial port asset consolidation

China’s Guangzhou Port Group has acquired a 52.51% stake in Zhongshan Port & Shipping Enterprise Group for RMB500m as a start to a ports consolidation plan of Guangdong province. Zhongshan Port & Shipping Enterprise Group will become a subsidiary of Guangzhou Port Group once the transaction completed. As one of the two principal parties involved in Guangdong ports consolidation action, Guangzhou port will integrate provincial port resources through capital increase and assets acquire. The municipal governments of Guangzhou and Zhongshan signed a strategy cooperation agreement to jointly develop port & shipping business and major infrastructure projects. The two parties will co-operate on the fourth phase terminal project in Nansha port area, which is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2020. The Department of Transportation of Guangdong Province issued plans earlier this year making Guangzhou port and Shenzhen port acted as the two major parties to consolidate port assets in Guangdong and further improve ports operation efficiency and competitiveness. Currently, Guangdong province has five major costal ports of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou and Zhanjiang, and two inland rive ports of Foshan and Zhaoqing. By the end of 2017, there were 2,715 productive berths in Guangdong. Guangdong achieved 66.37m teu container throughput and 1.98bn tons cargo throughput in 2017, separately ranking as number one and number two in the country.

JD launches parcel delivery in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou

Port of Guangzhou promotes South China 'city of opportunity'

A delegation from the Port of Guangzhou brought a roadshow to London this week, to remind of their role as one of China’s largest ports and to drum up support for the city’s hosting of the 31st World Ports Conference of the IAPH (International Association of Ports & Harbours) in May 2019. The port handled 590.12m tons of cargo in 2017, compared to 544.37m tons in 2016, while the number of containers rose to 20.37m teu from 18.85m teu - both rises of 8% year-on-year, it was disclosed. Guangzhou is now reckoned to rank as China’s third largest port and the world’s fifth largest in terms of overall traffic, as well as fifth busiest port in China and seventh worldwide in terms of containers. Mme Yue (‘Ann’) Yuan, deputy director of the Guangzhou Port Authority (GPA), detailed how the city lies in the centre of the Pearl River Delta, which together with Hong and Macau now form a ‘Greater Bay Area’ of combined 65m population that China is keen to develop as a unified regional economy – which if it was a country would be the world’s 12th largest, she added. Historically, under its former identity of Canton, Guangzhou was always the trade gateway to Southern China since the 3rd century, she said, and formed the starting point for the original Maritime Silk Road. Both the city and port plan to play an active role in China’s new Belt and Road Initiative, she added. Today the city and port are regaining their maritime prominence, enjoying calls from all the top lines such as Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and Cosco. Indeed, Cosco’s Shipping’s decision to headquarter its world-leading bulk and specialised carrier fleets in the city since its merger with China Shipping nearly three years ago had given Guangzhou a real boost, Mme Yuan said, meaning it could now lay claim to being mainland China’s second largest maritime hub (behind Shanghai). The GPA official ended by warmly inviting guests to attend next year’s World Ports Conference, and overseas partners to consider investing in Guangzhou as Southern China’s ‘city of opportunity’.
