SHANGHAI port posted a new record container volume of 43.5 million TEU last year, retaining the title of the world's busiest container port for the eleventh year in a row. The 43.5 million TEU volume in 2020 represents a small increase on Shanghai Port's 2019 total container throughput of 43.3 million TEU. Despite the continued Covid-19 outbreak and unstable international trading, Shanghai port maintained a strong performance in the past year. In July and October 2020, the port reported a container handling record volumes of 3.9 million TEU and 4.2 million TEU respectively. Yangshan port area hit a historical record and posted a container throughput of 20 million TEU last year. Covid scare delays cargo at Shanghai and sparks checks at China ports

CHINESE forwarders are reporting delays of up to three days for cargo moving through Shanghai Pudong Airport, following the discovery of a cluster of Covid-19 cases, reports London's Loadstar. "Import and export customs inspections are suspended until further notice from the government," said one forwarder. He added that while flights continued to operate, along with customs clearance, pick-up and delivery, things "might be a bit slow" - but any goods requiring customs inspection are "on hold". Another said delays of between one and three days should be expected. Workers from FedEx and UPS tested positive for Covid-19. FedEx said that it had strengthened the cleaning and disinfection of its facilities and would continue to operate at Shanghai Pudong. DHL also said it would disinfect imported freight. According to local media, Chinese health officials claimed the workers were "cleaning a cargo container from North America". It was not carrying cold chain cargo, however, as in August, when authorities said traces of the virus had been found on imported frozen food. The cluster at the airport has triggered stricter controls elsewhere: China's Shine reports that health inspections at Shanghai's ports will be tightened. Some 69 ports have undergone inspections this week.

Shanghai's Yangshan port installs export box weigh-ins

THE launch ceremony of the Verified Gross Mass system (VGM) was held at the Port of Yangshan, reports Shanghai Daily. The system was put into use to record the weight of all export containers and to ensure safety on ships. It was developed by the city's maritime bureau and Shanghai International Port Group and will be first applied to the Shengdong International Container Terminal. Shanghai is one of the biggest container outlets globally with an animal throughput of 40 million TEU and 4 million TEU alone last month. However, many accidents in recent memory have been attributed to overloading and false claims of container weight. This is why a new system like the VGM can improve the accuracy and efficiency of the port, said the port authority.

Port of Shanghai still number one, handling record 4.2m TEU in October

THE port of Shanghai has reaffirmed its position as the world's busiest container port last month setting a new record by handling 4.2 million TEU, a year-over-year increase of 15.7 per cent according to official data released by the Chinese authorities. The new record exceeded July's 3.9 million TEU and making Shanghai the first container port to exceed the 4 million TEU mark in a single month. Since the outbreak of Covid-19 at the beginning of the year, the Chinese economy has rebounded from the second quarter, and this has been felt in container volumes, which have only continued to soar, according to media reports. The growth in Shanghai's container volume mirrors similar overall growth in China's cargo volumes, which in total was up nearly 16 per cent at the major ports in October. Total container volume at China's largest seaports was up nearly 20 per cent in October. The strong volume growth has contributed to the reports by the largest shipping lines of both a strong rebound in business as well as a dramatic tightening of availability or in some cases already being fully booked during the peak shipping season. Many of the world's ports are reporting that they are no longer seeing blank sailings but are being asked to accommodate unscheduled additional arrivals as the carriers add sailings to their schedules. In 2019, Shanghai's total container throughput totalled 43.3 million TEU, a year-on-year increase of 4 per cent, and making the port the biggest container port in the world for the tenth year in a row. In 2010, Shanghai port overtook the Port of Singapore to become the world's busiest container port, and there has been no looking back since then.

THE Port of Shanghai has broken its own monthly container handling record, becoming the first port in the world to handle more than four million TEU in a calendar month. Shanghai, the world's biggest boxport, handled 4.2 million TEU in October, up 15.7 per cent year on year, surpassing the record it set in July by 297,000 TEU. "This shows the current strength of demand, but that might not last for many more months. We hear anecdotal reports of western ports somewhat melting down, but it appears that Shanghai - and the Asian ports generally - have the ability to rise to peak demand challenges," CTI Consultancy's Andy Lane told Singapore's Splash 247. Shanghai handled 43.3 million TEU last year, 6.1 million TEU more than second place, Singapore.
