ANNUAL container volume at the northern Chinese port of Tianjin, that serves Beijing the national capital 67 miles to the north, has exceeded 20 million TEU for the first time, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News. The record container throughput indicated that the port has made a breakthrough achievement for container business, and its ability to serve for the national and regional economic growth has been continuously enhanced, the port said. Tianjin port saw 10 services this year and connects with over 800 ports from 200 countries and regions. Container throughput growth rate of Tianjin port maintained the top 10 among global ports. In November, Tianjin port, Cosco Shipping Ports, China Merchants Port reached agreement to jointly invest and operate Tianjin Port Container Terminal which could further improve container shipping service efficiency and develop the port to be a hub port in northeast Asia region.

Tianjin Xingang shut down in October this year due to financial troubles DSIC. The shipyard will focus on large size vessel construction.  At the inauguration day of CSSC (Tianjin) Shipbuilding, the shipyard started construction of its first shipbuilding project, a 85,000 dwt bulk carrier ordered by Taizhou Jiahang Shipping.  Tianjin Xingang founded in 1940, had previously been declared bankrupt in 2000, and underwent restructuring in 2001. In 2017 the shipyard was relocated to a facility with a shipbuilding capacity of 2m tons and ship repair capacity of 220 vessels.

The shipyard has now announced that it's to discharge the labour contracts with its employees and will stop operation and production by the end of October. After the relocation in 2017, the company had a shipbuilding capacity of 2 million tonnes and ship repair capacity of 220 vessels. The insufficient profits from shipyard operations in recent years have led to the decision to shut down. The shipbuilding business of Tianjin Xinjiang is expected to be taken over by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry and the ship repair business will be handed over to Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding, according to Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.

Container lines are diverting reefer cargoes bound for Tianjin Port in China due to congestion caused by inspections and tests for Covid-19. Marcus Hand, Michele Labrut | Nov 24, 2020 Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Hapag-Lloyd have all issued customer notices warning of a shortage of reefer plugs at Xingang Terminal in Tianjin due to Covid-19 tests. “The Covid test procedures related to import reefer cargo are slowing down the operations in the port of  Xingang  (China) , where reefers keep lying on quay, occupying all the available the plugs. MSC cannot secure the discharge of reefer containers at the designated port where power source may be not available,” MSC said in a notice. Related: Latin American reefer trade to China grows 6.9% in first nine months Similar conditions were reported by ONE and Hapag-Lloyd, the latter noting vessel berthing schedules were being delayed due to the congestion. As a result lines are diverting reefer cargoes to alternative Chinese ports. Related: ONE implements $1,000 per reefer container surcharge for Shanghai and Xingang “Despite every effort, it was not possible to timely discharge all reefer containers in Tianjin and subsequently diverted to alternative ports such as Qingdao, Dalian, and other China Ports or keep the cargo at Busan. We anticipate that this situation, which is beyond Hapag-Lloyd’s control, and will continue for the upcoming weeks,” Hapag-Lloyd said. ONE told customers that due to the congestion in Tianjin, “This may result in extended period of storage of inbound reefers at transhipment port or the discharge of reefer containers at an alternative port without prior notice.” ONE is applying a $1,300 per container surcharge for reefers destined for Tianjin/Xingang, but will waive the fee if customers nominate another port of discharge. For existing reefer shipments to Xingang MSC warned that should containers be discharged at alternative or intermediate ports, or the voyage abandoned shippers would be charged additional freight and costs such as storage and demurrage. With immediate effect MSC said it would not be able to ship reefers to Xingang. “In view of the above scenario it is envisaged that portions of reefer business could chose alternative Chinese Port(s) of Discharge where it is expected that the same situation observed in XINGANG would rapidly replicate,” the line warned.    

CMA CGM hits reefers in Tianjin with US$1,250 congestion charge

FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM has imposed a port congestion surcharge in the Port of Tianjin Xingang, reports the American Journal of Transportation. The US$1,250 charge will apply to each reefer container to and from the US and territories, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

The new service, jointly operated by four lines, Cosco Shipping, OOCL, Regional Container Lines and Gold Star Line, will deploy seven 8,500-9,500 teu container vessels on weekly basis. Departing from Tianjin port, the major ports berthed will include Shanghai, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombo, and port Kelang. It is the fourth “Belt and Road” service launched at the port this year. China to promote Tianjin port as an international shipping hub

China’s National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Transport jointly issued guidelines to speed up Tianjin’s development to be an international shipping hub in north China. The aim is by 2025, Tianjin's position as the international shipping hub in north China will become more prominent, with it striving to be one of the top 20 international shipping hubs. The port aims to achieve 560m tonnes cargo throughput and 22m teu container throughput by 2025 and make breakthroughs in terms of intelligent and green port construction. Related: Tianjin port and Huawei to jointly develop green intelligent port According to the guidelines, Tianjin will promote professional terminals construction, improve public shipping channel navigation capacity and promote port facility construction for large size vessels, as well as multi-model transportation capacity improvement. Authorities will also support Tianjin port to consolidate port resources locally, and promote the coordinated development of ports in Tianjin and Hebei province. In the first seven months of 2020, Tianjin Port Group reported 10.287m teu container volume and 251m tonnes cargo throughput, an increase of 4% year-on-year.

Tianjin Port inks deal with Cosco to become regional port hub

THE port of Tianjin in north east China is set to boost its volumes following an agreement with Cosco to create a regional port hub. Under the terms of the agreement, Cosco Shipping Lines will help to boost Tianjin's container volumes by developing new routes in order to realise Tianjin's goal of being the hub port of Northeast Asia. Both sides pledged to deepen their cooperation in green and smart port construction, governance, overseas project investments and international talent development to enable Tianjin to fulfil its role in the Belt and Road initiative. Cosco will also help to fulfil the role that the government has envisioned for Tianjin in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Integration Plan, which will see northern Chinese cities and provinces using their comparative advantages and synergies to achieve regional growth. One concern is that the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, also known as the Three North Areas, is inadequately cosmopolitan and therefore not fully integrated into global supply chains. Physical infrastructure will be key in integrating the cluster, including integrating supply chains and the labour market. Tianjin, which was the ninth busiest port in 2019, with throughput of 17.3 million TEU, will be Cosco's strategic hub port in Northeast Asia. Relying on the advantages of Cosco's global transportation and sales network and Tianjin Port's geographical location, the two parties will collaborate in logistics projects such as transshipments around the Bohai Sea, developing the port hinterland, and transportation along the Eurasian Land Bridge. The idea is to ensure sufficient logistical coverage of Three North's hinterland, through improving sea-rail intermodal transportation, reports Container News, Jacksonville. Cosco and Tianjin Port said: "We will give full play to their advantages and jointly expand their overseas operations, particularly along the Belt and Road."      

Tianjin port and Huawei to jointly develop green intelligent port

China’s northern port operator Tianjin Port Group and information and communication technology provider Huawei have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to jointly develop a green intelligent port. According to the agreement, the two parties will enhance top level design of information network and cooperation on intelligent port. Huawei will support Tianjin port to explore and promote business transformation, upgrading and innovation, to improve port digitisation and provide comprehensive and high-efficient information and communication technology solutions. The port will actively promote integration of advanced technology with port operation such as 5G network and big data to develop a world-class port.  Last month, Huawei inked a letter of intent for 5G intelligent port application innovation cooperation with the southern Chinese port of Guangzhou, mainly service for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
