PostTime:2022-07-21 08:33:56 View:106

CHINA's Cosco Shippping has launched a new sea-rail intermodal train to deal with container and shipping service availability challenges, reports London's Port Technology. The first Cosco Shipping Wuhan-Xiamen sea-rail intermodal train was loaded with a total of 40 TEU of cargo and departed from Wuhan Wujiashan Station on June 26. It arrived at Xiamen Qianchang Station four days later before reaching the port on the same day. The new route is set to offer relief and aid for export of goods from inland regions by relying on their route network advantages and robust transportation resources. Xiamen seaport is located on the only eastbound trade corridor in Wuhan and, according to the company, and it has been heavily affected by the pandemic and suffered from congestion. Several groups under Cosco Shipping - Lines Wuhan, Xiamen and CSP Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal - have come together to create the Wuhan-Xiamen sea-rail intermodal transport service to meet customer demand and establish new channels for the export of goods from inland regions. Cosco Shipping said this new service will open a new channel for goods from inland China to reach the international market via a two-way interaction of "Silk Road Shipping - Yangtze River Economic Belt". The company also launched the Nanchang-Qinzhou-Vietnam and Guiyang-Qinzhou dedicated trains for domestic and foreign trade. The "Nanchang-Qinzhou-Vietnam" dedicated train - jointly launched by Cosco Shipping and JMC - departed from Nanchang International Land Port on June 13 and arrived at Qinzhou Port on June 16.

Shippers uses Shanghai and Xiamen instead of Covid-hit Ningbo

AS the world's third-largest box gateway Ningbo fights a Covid outbreak that has resulted in the lockdown of its Beilun district since last weekend, cargo owners are diverting freight away from the port to ship through Shanghai and Xiamen. While Ningbo's five container terminals, including the three in Beilun, are operating normally, the lockdown has led to trucker shortages and warehouse closures, making it impossible to get products to and from factories in the lockdown areas, reports IHS Media. "We are seeing an increase in shippers reassigning cargo to Shanghai or Xiamen ports [instead of Ningbo]," said Nick Xu, regional director/key accounts management at freight forwarder Rhenus Asia Pacific. Mr Xu said transport options include trucking containers to the two ports or using barge services via the Zhapu feeder port or container train services via Hangzhou to Shanghai. But the cost of those alternatives has doubled and space availability is critical, he added. About 20 percent of truckers have been given access permits, while the majority are in quarantine. "We're hearing from suppliers that the situation is improving but we have gotten no specifics," said the logistics manager at a US consumer products wholesaler. The source said factories supplying the company are working, but because they are in the lockdown zone nothing is moving in or out. "We still have pending shipments impacted," the executive said. The city's latest Covid outbreak could affect US$4 billion worth of imports and exports there for just one week, risk consultant Russell Group said earlier. That figure, based on the period between January 1-8, includes $236 million of integrated circuit boards and $125 million of clothing, Russell Group said.

Xiamen offers new rail route to Europe

A consignment of goods which is transported by sea for five days from Yokohama in Japan, is put on a freight train at Xiamen, a port in East China's Fujian province, heading for Duisburg, Germany on April 10. That consignment, comprising mainly bikes and ball bags, is expected to arrive at its destination in 22 days thanks to the China-Europe Railway Express, saving 15 days in travel time compared with transporting it by sea all the way. "Earlier, goods from Japan headed to European countries were transported by sea and air. But now, the China-Europe Railway Express provides a new option for large-scale logistics runners between Japan and European countries, creating a convenient and rapid mode at a reasonable price," says Chen Luchao, a manager with the Xiamen International Railway Service Co Ltd. Xiamen, a crucial point on the ancient marine Silk Road, has numerous waterways which help in integrating resources along both the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road to create a new-era international transport system. Nowadays, the sea-rail combined transportation system supported by the China-Europe Railway Express has enabled Xiamen to extend its business to more countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. So, in addition to Japan, goods from Vietnam, South Korea and Thailand can also be shipped to Xiamen and then be loaded onto the train to Europe. Chen also says that the company is working on sea-rail routes linking the Philippines and Malaysia, so goods from the two countries can be shipped to Xiamen and then use the railway to reach Europe. So far, the city has launched freight train services to a number of European countries including Germany, Russia and Hungary. Since it launched rail services in August, 2015, the China-Europe Railway Express has sent a total of 433 trains to Europe from Xiamen as of the end of March, shipping 15,883 40-foot containers with goods valued at 7.75 billion yuan ($1.15 billion), according to statistics from the Xiamen International Railway Service Co Ltd. Experts say that the China-Europe Railway Express which is dubbed the "caravan of steel camels" offers new opportunities not only to China but countries like Japan and South Korea. Nippon Express in Japan has been using the China-Europe Railway Express since July, 2017. The company transports goods from ports in Japan by sea to Dalian, a port city in China, or transports goods from Japan's major airports to Southwest China's Chongqing and then loads the goods on the China-Europe Railway Express to get to Duisburg. SG Holdings, one of the top three Express service providers in Japan is also in the process of providing logistics services in conjunction with Chinese railways, Cankaoxiaoxi, a Chinese newspaper run by Xinhua News Agency reported.
