Zhanjiang Port Group container throughput hits new high

[Photo/Zhanjiang Munucipal Government Office]   Zhanjiang Port Group broke its previous record by handling 89,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in May, up 24 percent year-on-year. The company's efforts to foster new business formats are seeing results, as the number of containers transported via a sea-rail combined model grew by a staggering 80 percent to more than 2,000 last month. Meanwhile, the "less than container load" (LCL) freight also witnessed an increase of 22 percent. It is noted for being able to increase efficiency and save costs by putting bulk cargo and other consignments bound for the same destination in a single container. In recent years, Zhanjiang Port Group has been constantly expanding its shipping network. It now operates 15 foreign trade shipping lanes worldwide, of which eight are connected to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).   {非本站图片} Zhanjiang Port is filled with containers. Colombo signs box shop deal with China Merchants, Zhanjiang Port Group

The Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) has signed an agreement on logistics development with Zhanjiang Port Group, in south western Guangdong province north of the Chinese island province of Hainan. The pact was signed at Zhanjiang City (pop 6.9 million), the old French Treaty port of Fort Bayard, as part of President Xi Jinping's One Belt, One Road world transport initiative, reports Lloyd's Loading List. The Maritime Silk Road component of the initiative calls for the development of infrastructure for ports along the route of which Sri Lanka's port is a part. CICT is a joint venture between Hong Kong listed China Merchants Holdings International and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. China Merchants has a 35-year, US$500 million build, operate and transfer contract with the port authority and holds a 85 per cent in the venture with the port authority holding the remaining 15 per cent. CICT with an annual capacity of 2.4 million TEU is Colombo's third container terminal, which started operations in April 2014.  

Two seafarers missing after oil tanker explodes off Zhanjiang port

An oil tanker exploded off China’s Zhanjiang port on Sunday, leaving two seafarers missing while 12 others were rescued, reports said. The product tanker Run Guang 9 went up in flames after a cargo hold caught fire when the ship was sailing from Zhuhai port to Zhanjiang port. Local media reported that there were 14 crew members onboard the ship, and two remained unaccounted for. Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Administration said search and rescue operations are underway and the fire on the tanker has been extinguished. More than 10 rescue vessels were deployed to the scene. The authorities added that measures have been taken to clean up potential pollution in the waters of the accident.

New container terminal commences trial operations at Port of Zhanjiang

THE first phase of Baoman Container Terminal at South China Sea port of Zhanjiang, is to commence trial operations in the fourth quarter of this year, Xinhua reports.  Zhanjiang Customs has signed a cooperation agreement with Zhanjiang Port Group on setting up customs inspection and clearance facilities at the new terminal.  Baoman Container Terminal is a key project of Guangdong province that is approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. Two 50,000-tonne container berths have been built up at the terminal, which can berth ships of 12,500 TEU and can handle as many as 800,000 TEU per year.

Zhanjiang port's half year container volume up 11pc to 159,000 TEU

SOUTHERN Guangdong seaport of Zhanjiang saw its container throughput grow 11 per cent year on year to 159,000 TEU in the first half, reports Xinhua. Overall, cargo volume increased 0.2 per cent to 35.83 million tonnes in the period. Petroleum volume increased 17 per cent, coal 60 per cent, grain 46 per cent and chemical fertiliser 10 per cent. Zhanjiang Port (Group), the largest public terminal operator of Zhanjiang port, has accelerated the construction of its major projects in the period. Construction of the first phase of Baoman Container Terminal and Bulk Cargo Terminal in Xiashan port area are almost fully completed. Phase 2 of the Baoman Container Terminal is expected to win approval within this year. Also, construction of Donghaidao port area is estimated to start this year.

Zhanjiang to build 'dry-port' in under-developed City of Yongzhou

SOUTHERN Guangdong seaport of Zhanjiang is to build a "dry port" in Hunan province's City of Yongzhou. The Xinhua report quotes an unnamed official saying that Yongzhou is not a economically well-developed city but has potential. Zhanjiang port's volume of transshipments to Hunan province every year via Yongzhou surpasses 5.5 million tonnes.

Zhanjiang port to launch two shipping lines to ASEAN countries

THE southern port of Zhanjiang plans to launch two new shipping lines to ASEAN countries to meet growing demand for trade between China and ASEAN, Xinhua reports. One shipping line will connect Zhanjiang to Thailand's Bangkok and Malaysia's Port Klang. Westbound cargo can be transshipped to Malaysia or Indonesia cities via Port Klang. On the return leg, the line will call at Hong Kong and Shenzhen to bring imports to Zhanjiang. Another line connects Zhanjiang to Singapore and Vietnam's Haiphong and back to Zhanjiang. On the westbound journey, shipments to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam can transit via Singapore. On the return voyage, the ships will carry imports from Haiphong back to Zhanjiang. Zhanjiang is one of the major ports in south China and the nearest in country to South East Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania. The port handled 155 million tonnes of cargo in 2011 and is operating a shipping network covering over 100 countries and regions in the world.

Guizhou signs customs deal with Shenzhen, Guangxi, Yunnan, Zhanjiang

SOUTHWESTERN Guizhou province has signed a regional customs clearance cooperation agreement with Shenzhen, south eastern province Guangxi, Yunnan and southern province Zhanjiang, Xinhua reports. Under the agreement, the four parties will join to reduce barriers in regional policies that hinder logistics add costs. Import and export transshipments from inland areas can enjoy simplified customs clearance procedures at coastal region. Last year, Guizhou posted a foreign trade value of US$3.1 billion, up 36 per cent over 2009. Guizhou will seize this opportunity and invite coastal cities to set up "dry ports" in the province that local shippers have longed for.
