On June 30, the manned submersible Jiaolong attracted the world’s attention by successfully reaching 7,035 meters below sea level during its sixth test dive, indicating that China’s deep-sea manned dive technology has reached the international advanced level, and enabling China to conduct scientific research and resource exploration in 99.8% of the world's deep sea areas. As one of the technical supervision bodies, China Classification Society (CCS), in accordance with the internationally accepted classification survey modes and procedures, provided a series of professional technical services for Jiaolong, including scientific research, rules, plan approval, survey and so on.

According to the rules and relevant standards of the Society, CCS was in close cooperation with the 702 Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation to review the Jiaolong’s design drawings and conduct field surveys. The success of 7,000 meter-scale sea trial marks that a major part of the classification survey has been tested out. The Jiaolong’s major components will be further inspected after the end of the sea trial. If they meet the classification requirements, CCS will issue the classification certificate to Jiaolong in accordance with the procedures, which will then become a world-leading as well as CCS’ first single-classed manned deep-sea submersible.

Jiaolong’s successful dive will further promote CCS and the related industry parties to jointly develop China’s deep-sea equipment industry and make due contribution to helping our country make the most of marine resources and explore deep-sea mysteries.
