Port of Qingdao 2012 throughput up 9.5pc, exceed 400 million tonnes

THE Port of Qingdao saw 2012 cargo volume increase 9.5 per cent year on year to exceed 400 million tonnes, managing to retains its the fifth largest port in China and seventh in world status, according to Ministry of Transport officials, reports Xinhua.
Qingdao port CEO Chang Chuande said the port devoted more effort to seeking more cargo to counter the global economic downturn. It held promotional conference in Xi'an and Zhengzhou and built its first "dry port" in Zhengzhou. The port also vied exploit the import boom as well as upgrading efficiency, growing annual container volume of more than one million TEU.
Qingdao's Dongjiakou port area achieved a throughput of 30 million tonnes in 2012, becoming a new growth area, said Mr Chang. Dongjiakou has attracted major corporations from home and abroad to establish their businesses there. Last year, investment in the port area totalled to CNY45.5 billion (US$7.3 billion).
Mr Chang said by 2015, Qingdao is aiming to raise Dongjiakou's throughput to 300 million tonnes.
