TAIWAN's Evergreen Line has signed agreements with both Costamare and Shoei Kisen Kaisha to each provide five 14,000-TEU ships, on charter, to be delivered between 2016 and 2017, as part of its fleet renewal programme.
The newbuildings will replace existing ships, thus holding down the company's operating tonnage as balance will be maintained by the redelivery of other ships when charters expire.
Evergreen has already taken delivery of the first two ships from an order for ten 13,800-TEU charter vessels under construction by Hyundai Heavy Industries. The remaining ships in this order are due in the second half of the year, reported the UK's Handy Shipping Guide.
Evergreen says these ships will enhance its operating performance by lowering fuel consumption and will meet stringent environmental rules.
Meanwhile, the third low-emission, fuel-efficient L-type vessel to be built by the CSBC Corporation in Taiwan for the carrier has just been named at a ceremony held at the Kaohsiung shipyard.
Said Evergreen chairman SS Lin: "Among the ten L-type vessels that Evergreen ordered from CSBC, two are now plying the oceans in the service of our customers. The deliveries of Ever Lucid and its sister ships will continue to enhance the competitiveness of our fleet."
With a deadweight of 105,000 tonnes, a draft of 14.2 metres and a length of 335 metres, the new ship is currently the biggest Taiwan-flagged vessel and is fitted with 948 reefer plugs.
The vessel is owned by Evergreen Marine Corp and will join its Far East-Europe service after her delivery on January 15. The ship is the latest vessel in the carrier's fleet renewal programme, which began in 2010. Thirty L-type vessels were ordered to replace existing units.
