THE northern Port of Weifang in the middle of Shandong peninsula moved a total of 26,000 TEU in the first quarter of the year, up 550 per cent year on year setting a quarterly record, reports Xinhua.

The rapid growth of the port was attributed to the introduction of a series of supportive measures and the operation of three 20,000-tonne terminals last year.
Thus far, the port has launched shipping services such as Weifang-Yantai, Weifang-Tangshan-Jinzhou and Weifang-Panjin-Jiaxing Zhapu line and expects to open north-south trunk container lines linking to China's main ports.
In addition, it also plans to inaugurate international shipping lines to South Korea, Japan and Malaysia.
At present, a 50,000-tonne berth and navigation channel are under construction, which are expected to enhance its comprehensive competitive power.
Once completed, it could provide container, bulk cargo, liquefaction products, passenger and ro-ro and river-sea intermodal services.
