Shanghai's first LNG-powered waste containership sets sail

SHANGHAI has launched its first domestic solid waste containership fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). With a cargo capacity of 600 tonnes, the vessel built by Shanghai SMI Environmental Industry Co can carry up to 30 TEU.

The ship is 55.6 metres long, 10 metres wide and 10 metres tall. It is deployed on the Huangpu River to carry domestic solid waste containers to waste disposal bases. Thirty-six old-fashioned waste containerships in Shanghai will gradually be replaced by this environmentally-friendly LNG ship model, reported Shanghai's {非本站网址}.
LNG as a ship fuel is a clean energy alternative. LNG has a higher ignition temperature than diesel and vaporises rapidly, causing no pollution to soil or water in the event of a leak.
