China won't budge on digital trade restrictions in US trade talks

CHINA is refusing to budge on US demands that it relaxes its digital trade restrictions, a top priority for American technology companies and one of the remaining obstacles in finalising a trade deal, reports London's Financial Times.

China has yet to offer significant concessions to end controls on foreign cloud computing providers, curb requirements for companies to store data locally, and loosen limits on the transfer of data overseas by US standards.
US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are set to travel to Beijing on March 28 for meetings with Liu He, China's Vice-Premier and leading economic official, to discuss the pressing issues.
Mr Liu is expected to travel to Washington the following week for a second session, with hopes of coming to a conclusion of a trade deal.
