NYK Line has approached compatriot Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) to construct a next-generation, scrubber-fitted bulk carrier on the back of a long term charter contract with JFE Steel Corporation.
The 211,000-dwt capesize bulk carrier will be delivered in 2021. Financial details of the newbuilding were not disclosed.
NYK said the newbuild will be used for trading iron ore and coking coal in and around the Pacific.
“The new energy-efficient vessel not only will be compliant with NOx (nitrogen oxide) emission regulations (Tier III) and the IMO SOx emission cap but also will have a larger cargo space than a conventional ship, leading to improved fuel economy,” NYK stated.
“The ship’s carbon dioxide emissions also meet the stricter Phase 2 Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements entering into force in 2020,” NYK added.
The ship to be installed with a scrubber will meet the upcoming IMO rule requiring a global 0.5% cap on fuel sulphur content starting 1 January 2020.
