Crew of CMA CGM chartered vessel abducted in piracy attack

UNCONFIRMED reports say that up to nine crew have been kidnapped in a pirate attack on a container ship in the Gulf of Guinea, some 48 nautical miles southwest of Equatorial Guinea.

Although the identity of the vessel wasn't disclosed, it's believed to be the 21-year old Tonsberg, which Security consultancy Dryad Global initially reported six crew missing but later amended that to up to nine crew.
The attack took place at 1430 hrs local time December 12 in the Gulf of Guinea 48 nautical miles southwest of Bioko island southwest coast, Equatorial Guinea. The 5,551 TEU vessel was headed for Cotonou, Benin after departing from the Cameroon facility Port Autonome de Kribi, according to VesselsValue data.
As of 1820 local time December 13, the ship was adrift near attack site, with Danish Navy vessel Esbern Snare nearby.
According to the eeSea liner database, the vessel is deployed on CMA CGM's Asia-West Africa WAX service jointly operated with Maersk.
The Liberian flagged vessel, built in 2001, is owned buy the Greece-based company Technomar.
