With a length of 200 metres, the vessel will link the Port of Montreal to the markets of Northern Europe to help with the increase in consumer demand, reports London's Port Technology.

The MPA has also welcomed the arrival of several new vessels with an increased capacity and greater fuel efficiency. The 3,600-TEU Vistula Maersk and the 3,600-TEU Vayenga Maersk are ice-strengthened. The vessels will utilise biofuel manufactured from recycled sustainable biomass.

According to the MPA, the other arrival - the Canadian-flagged 25,800 dwt geared bulker Nukumi - is built with design innovations that will help reduce the vessel's overall environmental footprint.

"The maritime industry has a key role to play in the energy transition and the Port of Montreal is pleased to welcome new generations of more carbon-efficient ships," said Montreal port manager Martin Imbleau.

"Providing optimal infrastructure for tomorrow's ships will always be at the heart of our priorities."

To mark the occasion, a plaque was presented to the ship's master Captain Arcenal Plaza Alnes upon his arrival at Cast Terminal.

The Port of Montreal moved 1.7 million TEU in 2021, despite facing several challenges and crises.

Driven by the changing consumer habits in the context of the Covid crisis, the port saw a 7.5 per cent year-on-year rise in container volumes.
