In news to boost the prospects of the ongoing Cancun UN climate change conference, China - the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases - has announced that it is on track to meet its 2010 target for cutting emissions of key pollutants.
The information was released via the state-controlled newspaper, The People's Daily, which quoted China's top climate official, Xie Zhenhua, who said:...'the total quality of emissions has fallen by 10%...this achievement gives China the image of a major responsible country.'
The Chinese are aiming to reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP, by 20% from 2005 levels and by 40-45% of those levels by 2020.
