Call for G20 to act on food price inflation

The Group of 20 finance ministers, meeting today and Saturday in Paris, are being urged to address the issue of global food and commodity inflation - the former said by the World Bank to be approaching 'dangerous levels' pushing millions more people into poverty daily. The price of staple foods has rocketed in the last year, driven by shortages caused by drought and floods; a global population increasing by 6 million per month and market speculation. Galloping food inflation caused riots in 2008 and has been a major factor in the recent unrest in north Africa and the middle-east. France takes the G20 chair for its first meeting and will also table for debate the problems of currency wars and trade protectionism
