Diana Shipping buys resale capesize at $50m from Qingdao Beihai

Greece’s Diana Shipping has acquired a capesize newbuilding bulker currently under construction from Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry at a resale price of $50m. The 180,000-dwt newbuilding is expected to be delivered to Diana Shipping by mid-January 2015. In June this year, Diana Shipping had also bought a resale capesize bulker at a price of $58m from the same Chinese shipyard. At present, Diana Shipping has a combined carrying fleet capacity of approximately 4.4m dwt with a weighted average age of 6.99 years. The shipowner is waiting for the deliveries of four newbuildings including two newcastlemaxes, one kamsarmax and the latest capesize order.

BEIHAI, a port of southwest China's Beibu Gulf port cluster, lifted 35,400 TEU from January to May, remaining at the same level as in the same period last year. In this period, the port's throughput tonnage grew 11.34 per cent to 7.1 million tonnes. Foreign trade cargo weighed 2.71 million tonnes, up 14.78 per cent.

FROM January to June, Beihai, a port on the Gulf of Tonkin in southwest China's Guangxi Autonomous Region, recorded a container throughput of 40,739 TEU, 22.7 per cent more than in the same period a year ago. The port's overall throughput increased 10.64 per cent to 7.95 million tonnes, said Xinhua. In the same period, Beihai Port Company, operator of Beihai port, recorded a throughput tonnage of 5.31 million tonnes, up 25 per cent year on year.

PORT of Beihai, in southwest China's Guangxi province, recorded a robust year-on-year increase of 23.6 per cent in its container throughput to 6,707 TEU in January, Xinhua reports. The port's throughput tonnage went 9.8 per cent up to 1.2 million tonnes. Facilities of Beihai Port Co., Ltd. handled 836,000 tonnes, up 26.8 per cent compared to the same month a year ago.

AS of November 9, Guangxi's port of Beihai has handled 14.04 million tonnes of cargo this year, 21.9 per cent more than in the same period in 2010, surpassing last year's annual throughput total, Xinhua reports. From January to October, port of Beihai lifted 59,048 TEU of containers, increasing 12.6 per cent over the same period last year. Throughput tonnage climbed 31.7 per cent to 13.59 million tonnes. In October, Beihai's Tieshan port area recorded a sharp year-on-year increase of 362 per cent in its throughput tonnage to 1.01 million tonnes.

Formosa Plastics Marine Corp (FPMC) has returned to the newbuilding scene after a four-year break. The shipping arm of industrial conglomerate Formosa Plastics Group has ordered two 82,000-dwt bulker newbuildings from state-owned Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China for between $33.5m and $34m each with delivery scheduled for the second half of 2013. Sources familiar with FPMC say the owner is also mulling signing up for several 205,000-dwt Newcastlemax newbuildings. “Before the collapse of the financial markets in 2008, Formosa Plastics was planning to place up to four 205,000-dwt bulker newbuildings and was in talks with several shipyards over its requirements. But with the market downturn, it stopped the discussions,” said one market source. “There is a possibility that the owner may revive its plan to build the Newcastlemaxes as we heard its parent company is building a new power plant.” -->

Taiwan's First Steamship has firmed up an option for a bulker at Chinese shipyard just days before the contract was set to expire. The owner has signed up for its second 81,200-dwt unit at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industries, it wrote in a statement to the Taipei bourse on Monday. The kamsarmax is costing $33.83m, a fraction under what the owner was rumoured to have paid for the firm order some months ago. The newbuilding, penned in conjunction with China Shipbuilding & Offshore Industry Corp, is being bought for subsidiary Grand Steamship. The second vessel would hit the water in the first quarter of 2013. The Taiwanese switched from Japanese yards to the Chinese facility for the first time when it signed up for the original kamsarmax due for delivery in September 2012. At the time of the original order a company source said the Chinese offered a price discount of around 30% on Japanese yards which could also not provide as early a delivery date.

Taiwan's First Steamship has opted to order new ships in China for the first time ever, saying Japanese yards are too costly. The owner confirms it has ordered an 82,000-dwt kamsarmax bulker at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry under the umbrella of China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC), and has until the end of the year to exercise an option for a second. It is the first vessel the company has booked in more than a decade. First Steamship previously built its vessels in Japan. "We turned to China because Japanese ships are too expensive now," said an executive at First Steamship. "On top of that, Japanese shipyards are not able to offer us early delivery dates." First Steamship does not disclose the cost of the newbuildings but says the Chinese price is at least 30% less than what the Japanese are seeking. Newbuilding players believe First Steamship is paying around $34.5m each for the kamsarmaxes. The owner says it chose Qingdao Beihai as it has a long relationship with the yard. "We are familiar with Qingdao Beihai as it has been repairing our vessels for some time," said the executive. A state-owned shipbuilder Qingdao Beihai is slated to deliver First Steamship's firm newbuilding in September 2012 and the optional vessel in the first quarter of 2013.
