Yard congestion has Shenzhen slowing export boxes

PostTime:2022-01-25 10:16:38 View:288

SHIPPERS moving goods through Chinese ports are facing additional disruption and delays days before factories to close for nearly two weeks for Chinese New Year February 1, reports IHS Media. Shenzhen's Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) began restricting the entry of laden export containers to four days before a vessel's time of berthing because of yard congestion. Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) handles 25 per cent of transpacific exports from China; half of its total volume - 28.8 million TEU - is US-bound. In an advisory, Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports, which operates YICT blamed the lack of space in its yard to vessel delays caused by US and European port congestion. Yantian has also seen a 30 per cent spike in cargo volumes in January compared with December, according to forwarders. "Under such circumstances, there are many laden boxes stuck inside the terminal and the yard density is close to full," YICT said. Although limiting gate-in entry, YICT said it would maintain its daily entry quota of 12,000 laden containers. Due to yard congestion at Shekou Container Terminal, the second-busiest of Shenzhen's three main container terminals, laden containers are only being accepted within three days of a vessel's actual arrival.

Docking at Yantian terminals delayed a week, Covid blamed

PostTime:2022-01-24 10:44:48 View:271

CARGO has been backing up at Shenzhen's Yantian terminals for as long as a week as congestion builds in China-US trade, reports Bloomberg. Manufacturers in southern China are currently making a last push to ship out goods before the Chinese New Year which starts February 1, with the People's Daily reporting that trucked volumes into Shenzhen's Yantian terminals were about 30 per cent above December levels. Those goods are stacking up as ships coming to pick them up have in turn been delayed by congestion in the US and Europe. Ships arriving to the Yantian terminal were delayed by seven day and the number of ships arriving from Europe and the US has fallen more than 40 per cent in the last two weeks, said a terminal advisory. That comes on top of the problems Shenzhen port was already facing, with a Covid outbreak earlier this month leading to lockdowns of districts, testing of workers and trucking delays at the Yantian and Shekou container terminals. The congestion has prompted the Yantian terminal to say it will start restricting the acceptance of containers. To stop operations getting worse, from Friday full containers can only be trucked in four days before vessels are due to berth, the operator said. Last week was the peak period to ship goods in and out of China as workers will start to head home for the holiday, according to digital freight forwarder Zencargo. That's followed by a lull in activity before shipping demand picks up in mid-February.

23,992-TEUer transits Suez on Qingdao-Rotterdam run

THE Panamanian-flagged 23,992-TEU Ever Alp has made its maiden voyage through the Suez Canal, from Qingdao en route to Rotterdam, reports Cairo's Egypt Independent. The head of the Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabie said that the canal has proven its leadership and ability to receive all giant containerships with a capacity of 24,000 containers. This category of giant ships specialises in crossing the Suez Canal and not any other shipping lanes to transport trade between Europe and Asia, he said. To ensure the safe passage, Mr Rabie ordered that all necessary measures be taken and appointed a group of senior guides within the authority to guide its journey across the canal. He also delegated two senior guides to board the ship, welcome its crew, hand over a souvenir to the captain of the ship, and complete its guidance from Ismailia to Port Said. The Ever Alp is the sister ship to the largest container ship in the world, the Ever Ace, and is fourth in a series of 12 giant A24 class ships, be built as part of Taiwan's Evergreen shipping line, where Samsung Shipyards Industries Heavyweight in South Korea is building six ships and six others are being built in China. The ship is 400 metres long and 61.5 metres wide, with a net tonnage of 221,000 tons, and it can carry up to 12,000 FEU on board.

Covid testing causes renewed congestion in Ningbo-Shanghai

PostTime:2022-01-18 09:19:46 View:371

SHIPS were making the switch to Shanghai from Ningbo to avoid Covid delays which has thwarted trucking services, according to forwarders, reports Bloomberg. Those diversions are adding to the new wave of congestion facing China's ports as an increasing number of cities deal with the Covid scare. Strict testing of dockers and truckers ahead of Chinese New Year at the end of this month is further stressing already strained supply chains as the Covid scare heads into its third year. In the country's technology hub of Shenzhen in the south, testing of residents and truckers to contain an outbreak means a queue of ships has formed at the port. That's caused the Shekou terminal to start restricting the acceptance of goods, meaning that full containers can only be trucked in three days before vessels are due to arrive, the terminal operator said. Meanwhile, the northern Chinese city of Tianjin ordered workers to take a half-day break for Covid testing as officials try to contain the spread of the omicron variant. Trucking capacity is estimated to be half normal levels, and drivers are required to be tested daily before entering the port, said Alex Hersham, CEO of digital freight-forwarder Zencargo.

Covid lockdown measures disrupt operations at Ningbo port

PostTime:2022-01-06 08:29:11 View:305

CORONAVIRUS disruptions have continued in China's Ningbo, where the world's third-largest container port is striving to maintain operation levels. Truck entry into the port area remains restricted while some container freight stations have halted operations due to roadblocks and other lockdown measures in the city's Beilun District, home to a string of large box terminals, reports UK's Lloyd's List. The latest infection wave, which emerged on January 1, has so far been contained within the district, where 26 local cases were confirmed on January 4. Most of them are from a workshop of a clothing company named Shenzhou International, the Ningbo government told a press conference. Among over 20,000 local container truck drivers, only 6,000 some had received special passes to enter and leave the port via five designated routes, according to the latest available government update. Delays of shipments are inevitable due to the traffic control, said a local freight forwarder. "Also, some truck drivers trapped in the lockdown area are unable to apply for the passes. Some are reluctant to go to Beilun and the terminals now deemed as a Covid risky area that can invoke quarantine requirement in other cities." Some warehouses and factories have also halted the pickup and delivery of cargo amid the restrictive rules, he added. "The impact is worse because we are now in the peak season for exports ahead of the Chinese New Year." The situation has raised concerns over deteriorating port congestion in the region, where pilots are also in short supply owing to separate Covid cases confirmed in other cities along the Yangtze River. Outside of Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan, figures from Lloyd's List Intelligence show that 120 ships comprising 613,713 TEU are still at anchor off the two ports on January 4. That is higher than the levels seen in mid-August when a major terminal in Ningbo's Meishan Island was shut down for several weeks because of a dockworker contracting coronavirus. Jiang Yipeng, a senior executive at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, which handled more than 30 million TEU last year, said the port is revving up efforts to cope with the challenge. The port handled over 97,000 TEU of containers a day between January 1-3, an increase of 8.5 per cent compared with the year-earlier period, he said.
