Rizhao port and Rio Tinto strengthen cooperation

Rizhao Port inked cooperation framework agreement with miner Rio Tinto to expand iron ore and supply chain services. Katherine Si | Nov 26, 2021 The two parties will establish an exchange and communication mechanism for port safety management and environment protection, and jointly explore safe, efficient, green and smart development. Rizhao Port and Rio Tinto also establish a Joint Technology Center for providing more innovation in services for iron ore business. Rio Tinto launched RTBF blending ore business at Rizhao port in 2020, a milestone for the two parties to deepen collaboration. 

Shenzhen 8-month volume up 11pc to 23.7 million TEU

THE Port of Shenzhen has posted a 10.7 per cent year-on-year increase in January-October throughput to 23.788 million TEU, reports Jacksonville's Container News. Foreign trade was up 11.3 per cent to 21.99 million TEU, and empties' throughput increased 18 per cent to 7.35 million TEU. During the period the port handled vessels of 62 international container liner routes. Shenzhen's transportation department said Covid caused congestion that resulted in a shortage of shipping capacity. According to officials, that helped to increase transportation of foreign trade and provide cargo owners with as much space as possible. The Ministry of Transport of China recently formulated and issued the "14th Five-Year Development Plan for Comprehensive Transportation Services" to promote the development of comprehensive transportation services. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period China achieved significant progress in the development of comprehensive transportation services, said the report.

Guangzhou adding Alexandria port as 54th sister port

Guangzhou port signed Letter of Intent for sister port cooperation with Alexandria port in Egypt. Katherine Si | Nov 19, 2021 The number of sister ports cooperating with Guangzhou reached 54. Since from 2003, Guangzhou port has established sister port cooperations with Port of Durban in South Africa, Lagos in Nigeria and Port of Dakar in the Republic of Senegal. OOCL to boost coverage of China, Singapore and Malaysia service

ORIENT Overseas Container Line (OOCL) is introducing a new container shipping service to strengthen its China to South-East Asia service network with the launch of the new China Straits Service 3 (CSS3). "To supplement CSS1 and CSS2 which were launched in 2020, CSS3 will further enhance the network coverage between China, Singapore and Malaysia, providing customers with competitive and reliable shipment options," the Hong Kong-based carrier said. The new CSS3 service will directly connect multiple ports in China with Singapore and Malaysia to cater for the increasing demand in the market, the company said. CSS3 port rotation is Qingdao, Shanghai, Xiamen, Nansha, Singapore, Port Kelang, Penang, Port Kelang, Pasir Gudang, Nansha and returning to Qingdao. The first sailing will start from Qingdao on December 18, 2021.  

Dalian port operations stable amid latest Covid-19 outbreak

The northeast Chinese port of Dalian is facing a new round of Delta variant of Covid-19 outbreak caused by cold chain supply. Nearly 70% cold supply chain goods are imported through Dalian port, with more than 600,000 employees are handling imported cold-chain products. So far, other Chinese port operations in the region remain largely unaffected. Covid outbreaks in Chinese ports are of major concern to shipping, especially the container sector which saw major impact from the three-week closure of around 70% of Yantian port earlier this year. In August Ningbo-Zhoushan’s Ningbo Meishan Island International Container Terminal (MSICT) was closed due to a single Covid case among its workforce. However, the rest of the port continued to operate meaning the impact on global shipping was not as great as that of the Yantian closure.    

China major ports container volume fell 0.6% in late Oct

Container volume at eight major Chinese ports declined 0.6% year on year in late October. Katherine Si | Nov 12, 2021 Export container volume dropped 0.8% while the domestic volume just declined 0.1% in late October. Among which, the port of Tianjin and Dalian posted a growth rate of over 10% for export container volume. Cargo throughput at major coastal hub ports increased 4.8% year on year while international trade cargo throughput up 3%. The port of Rizhao posted a growth rate of over 100%. Port inventory declined 6.7%. Metal ore shipments at major Chinese ports increased 8.9% while the port inventory increased 15.2%. The port of Ningbo-Zhoushan and Rizhao posted a growth rate of over 20%. In late October, cargo throughput at three major Yangtze river ports, Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing, slightly increased 0.6%. Container volume dropped 1.6% year on year.  For the whole month of October, cargo throughput at major Chinese coastal ports increased 0.3% year on year. The container volume at eight major ports increased 0.4%.    

BAL Container Line launches Australia service from Xiamen

The maiden voyage connecting China with Australia provided by BAL Container Line was launched at COSCO Shipping Ports’ Xiamen Yuanhai terminal. Katherine Si | Nov 08, 2021 The service will deploy three 5,000 teu containerships initially, calling at major Chinese ports of Qingdao, Ningbo, Xiamen and Yantian, and the ports of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia.  Currently, Xiamen Yuanhai terminal operates three routes to Australia.

Container volume at eight major Chinese ports declined 6.3% year on year in mid-October. Katherine Si | Nov 04, 2021 Export container volume dropped 3.3% while the domestic volume declined 14.2% in mid-October. Some of the ports shut operation temporarily due to bad weather. Cargo throughput at major coastal hub ports dropped 4.9% year on year while international trade cargo throughput also declined 3.1%. Metal ore shipments at major Chinese ports declined 10.5% while the port inventory increased 16.9%. In mid-October, cargo throughput and container volume at three major Yangtze river ports, Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing, dropped 21.2% and 3.1% year on year, respectively.

DNV and Atlas establish Shanghai Joint Collaboration Space

DNV and Atlas Corp shipping arm Seaspan Corporation have set up an Atlas-Seaspan and DNV Joint Collaboration Space (JCS) in Shanghai. The JCS shall serve as an interactive platform for expertise across the two entities to exchange experiences and insights. New China-India service debuted at Nansha port Nansha Port

Wan Hai Lines and Interasia Lines jointly launched China-India service from Nansha port of Guangzhou. Rizhao port starts operations of fully automated container terminal

Rizhao port in China has started operations of a fully automated container terminal with an innovative side loading and parallel layout. Katherine Si | Oct 12, 2021 The fully automated container terminal uses a process of shore layout side loading and unloading technology plus driverless truck horizontal transportation that could reduce the comprehensive terminal cost by 70%. It could also lower 50% total energy consumption of single container during loading and uploading. The independently designed vehicle road coordination system V2X used for the terminal is designed for the safe and orderly operation of driverless container trucks achieving "one click container handling" from the landside. A success rate reaching 100% is claimed, the highest level of the industry. For the first time, the terminal jointly applies Beidou + 5G as well as domestic terminal operating system TOS on the whole process of automated container handling. Since the establishment two years ago, Shandong Port Group had been engaged in fully automated container terminal construction, the successful operation of automated container terminals at Qingdao port and Rizhao port will further promote smart port development of the group.

SITC and Xiamen port collaborate on container shipping expansion

SITC and Xiamen port have inked three-year cooperation agreement for global shipping service development. Katherine Si | Sep 16, 2021 The two parties will jointly develop international shipping routes, cargo transhipment, global logistics chain service, cross-border e-commerce logistics platform and port cargo hinterland resources expansion. SITC will develop Xiamen port to be a regional container shipping home port, explore international shipping service and establish transhipment base, aiming to secure double digit growth for Xiamen ports’ container throughput during 2021 and 2023, according to Yang Xianxiang, ceo of SITC. Related: SITC posts a 79.6% first half revenue growth Cai Liqun, general manager of Xiamen port said, as the world’s 14th largest container port, Xiamen port is forming alliance with SITC for high quality development on container hub port construction and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).  Currently, SITC operates seven shipping routes for Belt and Road Initiative.
