Hong Kong retail sales value up 8.8pc in May as volume grows 5.8pc

HONG KONG retail sales in May rose 8.8 per cent in value year on year to HK$36 billion (US$4.64 billion), according to provisional estimates compiled by the Census & Statistics Department. After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, the volume of total retail sales rose 5.8 per cent, a statement from the HK Government Information Services (GIS) said. The revised estimate of the value of total retail sales in April, at HK$35.7 billion, was up 11.4 per cent compared to the same month last year, while the volume of total retail sales increased 7.6 per cent. In the first five months of the year, total retail sales increased 13.5 per cent in value and 9.1 per cent in volume over the same period a year earlier. The volume of sales of miscellaneous consumer durable goods increased the most by 52.7 per cent. This was followed by sales of motor vehicles and parts (up 41 per cent); electrical goods and photographic equipment (up 20.1 per cent); commodities in supermarkets (up 9.1 per cent); footwear, allied products and other clothing accessories (up 6.9 per cent); commodities in department stores (up 5.9 per cent); miscellaneous consumer goods (up 2.1 per cent); fuels (up 1.3 per cent); and apparel (up 0.7 per cent).

Hong Kong box throughput up 7% in Q2

In the second quarter of 2011, the port of Hong Kong handled 6.4 million TEUs of containers, up seven percent over a year earlier, according to the Census and Statistics Department, reported Xinhua. In the first half of 2011, the port of Hong Kong handled 11.9 million TEUs of containers, up four percent over the same period in 2010. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter comparison, laden container throughput increased by eight percent in the second quarter of 2011. Within this total, inward and outward laden containers rose by 11 percent and five percent respectively.

Zhangjiagang first 7-month box volume up 39.9pc to 620,000 TEU

THE Port of Zhangjiagang, 70 miles upstream from Shanghai in Jiangsu province, enjoyed a 39.9 per cent year-on-year increase in container volume to 620,000 TEU in the first seven months, as well as an overall 37.5 per cent jump in cargo throughput to 110 million tonnes reported Xinhua.Import and export volumes increased 17.2 per cent year on year to 2.7 billion tonnes. The city (pop 1.2 million) has had an annual throughput of more than 100 million tonnes for five years, which has best the cargo volume in all of Jiangsu province.

Fujian container throughput up 25pc in first eight months

PORTS in southeast China's Fujian province registered a 25 per cent year on year container throughput to 5.66 million TEU in the first eight months, reports Xinhua.The province's Fuzhou port moved 973,500 TEU with a 24.6 per cent growth, while Xiamen port handled 3.79 million TEU, up 27.9 per cent.The province's port throughput totalled 209 million tonnes, up 1.6 per cent in the first eight months. Xiamen port moved 89.2 million tonnes, up 16.9 per cent, while Fuzhou port down 20.7 per cent to 52.67 million tonnes.During the same period, the province's road freight volume grew 20.9 per cent to 301 million tonnes, while waterborne traffic increased 19 per cent to 111 million tonnes.
