Shenzhen's Chiwan port on upwards march

Shenzhen port's Chiwan container terminal has seen its cargo volumes increase yet again according to one of its port operators.

Shenzhen-listed terminal operator Shenzhen Chiwan Wharf Holdings has reported a jump of 13.5% in container throughput for September year-on-year, up from 303,449TEU to 352,000TEU.

In a statement to the stock exchange it said that total container cargo handled by the company rose 32.7% to 4.6 million TEU during the period January-September compared to 3.4million TEU during the same period in the previous year.

A major reason for its volume boost is the increase in international services that have started calling at Chiwan - as of July a total of 55 international operations had so far called at the terminal.

The Shenzhen terminal complex - which is the second largest container port in China and the fourth largest in the world - has made great efforts recently to boost its cargo from the interior of China. It has expanded its rail links and increased its network of container depots, as well as expanding its barge services. This has no doubt benefitted Chiwan terminal.
