THE Port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan's largest container port, has added two berths in the first phase of its new container terminal with 16 metres alongside and capable of handling 12,500-TEU ships, up from its present 10,000-TEU limit. Phase one of the new International Container Terminal (ICT) consists of four berths overall and will be finished by 2013 as a public-private partnerships and will increase port capacity by three million TEU. A road has also just been opened that links ICT with Kaohsiung's municipal expressway network. "To meet the needs of increasingly large capacity container vessels and make available adequate berth and yard space, the KHB [Kaohsiung Harbour Board] has been engaged in upgrading container facilities. A cornerstone of this is the new ICT, a vital component of key forward-looking central government plans to bolster national economic competitiveness.' Kaohsiung has been losing market share in recent years. Last year, Kaohsiung moved 9.2 million TEU, up seven per cent from the 8.6 million TEU lifted in 2009, but still short of the 9.7 million TEU achieved in 2008. (Source: Shippinggazette)
