Lomar Shipping has penned its second newbuilding contract in a month.

It has booked up to six containerships at China’s Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard hot on the heels of a pact for half a dozen bulkers at Cosco Corp (Singapore).

In a statement it explains the 2,190-teu boxships will start to hit the water in early 2014. No price was revealed.

Achim Boehme, CEO of Lomar, said: “We are re-investing in our fleet with these new vessels.

“Wenchong has a very strong reputation for delivering excellent quality container vessels and being among the best shipyards in the ‘feeder’ size sector.”

Designed by SDARI, the ships will deliver “improved performance compared with existing container vessels of the same size by providing significant savings on fuel consumption, and at a wide range of speeds in comparison to those presently in the market,” Lomar said.

Last month Lomar inked potential six-bullker deal with Cosco.

The company operates 13 feeder containerships, most built in the 1990s, as well as bulkers, reefers, tankers and offshore vessels.
