Tianjin's Pacific International Terminal throughput rises rapidly

Tianjin Port Pacific International Container Terminal, located at port of Tianjin's Dongjiang port area, has experienced rapid growth since it started operation at the end of 2007, Xinhua reports. Being the largest container terminal at the port of Tianjin, Pacific terminal's throughput climbed from 835,200 TEU in 2008 to 2.45 million TEU in 2011. The terminal is operated jointly by Tianjin Port Group and Port of Singapore Authority (PSA). It has six 150,000-tonne container berths with a quay length of 2,300 metres and a depth of 16 to 18 metres, able to accommodate seven containerships of the sixth generation. It can handle up to four million TEU every year and is operating 19 international shipping lanes to Korea, Japan, South East Asia, Iran, Europe and US.

Port of Tianjin builds 17 dry ports along Yellow River

North China's Tianjin port has built 17 dry ports so far along the Yellow iver basin to serve the exporters in hinterland, marking the Harbour-Yellow River shipping co-operation a highlight of the country's regional economic co-operation, reports Xinhua. Provinces along the Yellow River can boost the trade with the outside by means of custom and port operational mode. Tianjin port's throughput reached 450 million tonnes last year, ranking the fourth place in the world, while its container throughput stood at 11.5 million TEU. The port expected to handle 560 million tonnes of cargo and move 18 million TEU by 2015. The port-river co-operation has had some good results. The Yellow River's import and export trade value reached US$375.5 billion, while most of trade cargo contributed for Tianjin port, says Ms Li Wengling, deputy director of Tianjin's Port Service Office. At present, Tianjin port's direct economic coverage for hinterland reaches five million square kilometres. Tianjin has 70 per cent of its cargo throughput and over 50 per cent of its trade value coming from other outside provinces and areas.

Tianjin's longer, deeper 300,000-tonne navigation channel now complete

PORT of Tianjin's 300,000-tonne navigation channel has been finished and passed inspection, Xinhua reports. The project is the widening and deepening of the previous 250,000-tonne navigation channel, costing CNY1.4 billion (US$221 million). The depth of the channel has gone from 19.5 to 21 metres, while the distance it covers has been extended from 44 to 45.5 kilometres. Tianjin is the largest port in northern China. It recorded a container throughput of 11.5 million TEU and a throughput tonnage of 450 million tonnes last year, nine per cent more than in 2010, making it the fourth largest port in the world. It invested CNY13.5 billion on fixed assets last year.

China's Shenhua receives approval to build three coal berths at Tianjin Port

The listed subsidiary of China Shenhua Group, Shenhua Energy Co., has received approval from the country's National Development and Reform Commission to build the second phase of its captive coal wharf at Tianjin Port, Shenhua Energy said Tuesday. With a total investment of Yuan 3.82 billion ($602.1 million), the second phase of Shenhua's captive coal wharf will comprise three coal berths, including one capable of docking vessels with a capacity of 100,000 mt, one capable of docking 70,000-mt vessels, and one capable of docking 50,000-mt vessels, it said. Since the completion of the first phase at Tianjin Port in 2006, Shenhua has been operating two dedicated coal berths at the port, as reported previously. Of the two coal berths, one is capable of docking vessels with a carrying capacity of up to 150,000 mt, and the other is capable of docking vessels with a carrying capacity of up to 70,000 mt. With a total of five coal berths at the port, which is connected to Shenhua's captive Huanghua-Wanjiamatou coal railroad, the Tianjin Port is set to become one of Shenhua's major coal transportation outlets in China.

Tianjin Port and Singapore's PSA sign deal to cement bilateral ties

TIANJIN Port Group (TPG) and Singapore's PSA International (PSA) has signed a "strategic cooperation framework agreement" to further strengthen the collaboration between the companies for the development of Tianjin port. So far, PSA has invested in two of the port's container terminals, namely Tianjin Port Pacific International Container Terminal (TPCT) and Tianjin Port Alliance International Container Terminal (TACT). These two facilities have a total of 10 berths that can handle the biggest containerships. This makes "Tianjin Port one of the preferred ports of call for mega containerships in the northeast Asia region," said the joint statement. Said TPG president Tian Chang Song: "Both organisations recognise the tremendous potential of Tianjin Port as a major container hub in the Bohai Rim to support the further development of industries and hinterland investments in northeast China. Together, TPG and PSA aim to ensure that Tianjin Port will be a world class facility for global container shipping." Said PSA chief executive Tan Chong Meng: "PSA is committed to give its best expertise and resources to help develop Tianjin Port into a resounding success." The agreement was signed on May 18 by TPG group president Tian Chang Song and PSA group CEO Tan Chong Meng in the presence of TPG chairman Yu Ru Min and PSA group chairman Fock Siew Wah.  

Tianjin's inland 'dry ports' up 11.4pc to 41,400 TEU in first quarter

THE "dry port" facilities of Tianjin port, established by the port in hinterland regions and offers intermodal service to vie for cargo, handled 41,400 TEU in the first quarter of, 11.4 per cent more year on year, Xinhua reports. So far, Tianjin has established "dry ports" in 21 cities in neighbouring provinces and distant regions, including Hebei province's Shijiazhuang and Inner Mongolia's Baotou. Tianjin has also set up three regional marketing centres in Yinchua, Xian and Baotou to manage these facilities. This year, Tianjin will have four "dry ports" in Baoding, Handan, Yinchuan and Zhangjiakou city operational to speed up the building of another three in Bayannagur, Chifeng and Xingtai.

HANJIN has launched a new shipping line to Europe calling at Tianjin's Euroasia International Container Terminal, Xinhua reports. This is the third international shipping route started from Tianjin, using four 13,000-TEU and seven 10,000-TEU ships, offering one sailing a week, calling at Algeciras, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Le Havre. Hanjin is the largest shipping company in Korea and the ninth biggest in the world. It has a fleet of 100 containerships with a total capacity of 483,000 TEU.

Japanese carrier Kambara Kisen Co Ltd (KKC) has inaugurated a near sea shipping links connecting Tianjin's Orient Container Terminal to ports on the Sea of Japan, Xinhua reports. This is Tianjin's first shipping line to minor ports in Japan. It uses five ships, calling at Tianjin, Maizuru, Niigata, Toyama, Kanazawa and Otaru. Tianjin is now operating 16 shipping services to Japan, which cover the three major economic circles centering Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, as well as the four regional centres of Kyushu, Shikoku, Sea of Japan and Seto Inland Sea.

Tianjin is now operating 16 shipping services to Japan, which cover the three major economic circles centering Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, as well as the four regional centres of Kyushu, Shikoku, Sea of Japan and Seto Inland Sea.  

Tianjin container traffic up 5.2 percent in Jan-Feb

From January to February, the Port of Tianjin, traditional gateway to Beijing, handled 1.77 million TEU, a 5.15-percent gain year-over-year, Xinhua reports. The port's overall throughput increased 5.11 per cent to 69.22 million tonnes. Last year, Tianjin registered a throughput of 450 million tonnes, making it the fourth largest port in the world. This year, in order to meet its throughput target of 470 million tonnes, Tianjin will launch series of measures to secure and expand its cargo sources, looking to developing more foreign and domestic cargo, and strengthen cooperation with inland cities to increase intermodal links.

Tianjin container throughput expected to hit 18 million TEU by 2015

THE Port of Tianjin's container throughput is expected to top 18 million TEU and overall cargo tonnage figures of 560 million tonnes by 2015, according to the latest plan issued by the Tianjin government. In addition by 2015, Tianjin's air cargo throughput will hit 500,000 tonnes, while the city's logistics industry added value will exceed CNY190 billion and be growing at an annual rate of more than 20 per cent, cited a report from reported Xinhua. By 2015, Tianjin plan to launch a number of logistics projects to attract renowned airlines, ocean carriers and logistics operators to set up their branches in Tianjin, and develop itself into an international logistics and shipping centre in north China.

China's Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry has won a newbuilding order for four firm 40,000-dwt handymax bulkers plus four options. Strategic Bulk Carriers, the dry-bulk arm of Singapore and Connecticut-based tanker specialist MT Maritime Management (MTMM), has made its first foray into vessel owning with the handymax order. Market sources say that Strategic placed the order earlier this year but it has gone unreported until now. The vessels will be delivered in May, August, October and December 2013. Strategic is only the second foreign shipping company this year to have signed up for newbuildings at state-owned Tianjin Xingang under the umbrella of CSIC. French owner Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) was first out with an order for two 180,000-dwt capesize bulkers and two 40,000-dwt handymax bulkers, all for delivery in 2013. The capesizes are costing $54m each and the handymaxes $28m apiece.
