Three dead, three missing after cargoship sinks off Zhoushan

Three people dead and three are still missing after a cargoship sank in the Zhoushan sea area, Zhejiang province. The cargoship, registered in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, sank while sailing in the northern side of the sea area of Dayushan, Zhoushan. All the six crew on the vessel were thrown overboard when the vessel sank. Three of the crew have been confirmed dead and the others three remain missing. Zhejiang Maritime Bureau had assigned over 20 ships for search and rescue operations. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port recorded 1.12bn tonnes of cargo throughput last year, ranking it as the world’s busiest port for eleven consecutive years. In 2019, Ningbo-Zhoushan port strengthened the multi-modal transportation service and improved the handling capacity for the large-size vessels, which greatly supported the increasing cargo handling demands, the port said. For its next development step, Ningbo-Zhoushan port will keep improving the shipping and port infrastructure and its service ability, accelerating the opening up for the construction of world top-class port, it said. THE container throughput in sea-rail transport at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in east China's Zhejiang Province increased over 33.3 per cent year on year in 2019, according to the port. The container throughput exceeded 800,000 TEU in 2019, making the port the second largest in the country's sea-rail transport sector after east China's Qingdao port, according to Xinhua. Currently, Ningbo-Zhoushan port operates 17 sea-rail transportation routes covering fifteen provinces, cities and regions domestically. It has also launched cold chain sea-rail transport and other services to expand its operations. In December last year, the port commenced operation of Chuanshangang railway, which is jointly invested and constructed by Ningbo municipal government and China Railway Group. The new railway link will be able to further improve the multi-modal transportation capacity of Ningbo-Zhoushan port, reports Seatrade Maritime News, Colchester, UK.

The Chinese port of Ningbo-Zhoushan posted 800,000 teu sea-rail cargo volumes in 2019, with a year-on-year growth of 33.3%. The increasing sea-rail container cargo volume makes the port the second largest in China’s sea-rail transportation sector following the north port of Qingdao. As of today, Ningbo-Zhoushan port operates 17 sea-rail transportation routes covering fifteen provinces, cities and regions domestically. Ningbo-Zhoushan to complete work on 10m teu container terminal in 2020

China’s busiest port of Ningbo-Zhoushan is on track to complete the construction of the new 10m teu container terminal at Meishan. The port has just started the construction of the number 9 berth, which is scheduled for completion in 2020. Meishan container terminal will have 10 container berths with a maximum handling capacity of 10m teu once fully completed. The first phase project includes five berths which are opened for operation. The remaining five berths of the second phase includes two 200,000 tonne-class and three 150,000 tonne-class deepwater berths with a handling capacity of 4.3m teu. Currently, China has three 10m teu-class container terminals at Yantian, Qianwan, Qingdao and Chuanshangang. In 2018, Ningbo-Zhoushan port posted a container throughput of 26m teu in 2018, ranking third globally.

Scores of containers overboard when 2,470-TEUer lists off Zhoushan

MORE than 70 containers were lost after the 2,470-TEU Xin Ou 21 developed a heavy starboard list at night off Zhoushan en route to Rizhao, reports Kiev's Maritiime Bulletin, which specialises in marine casualties. The ship understood to be safe, anchored north of Zhoushan, with authorities having to organise the the recovery of dozens of containers and their content, floating in the sea and scattered around coastline. Recovery operations are under way, all ships navigating in the area are warned of floating containers as a hazard to navigation.

THE administrators of bankrupt Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding has managed to sell the entire assets of the shipyard during a second round auction. The assets were sold for a discounted price of CNY958 million (US$135.7 million), after the first auction with a starting price of CNY1.19 billion ($173 million) failed at the end of July. The assets sold include the shipyard's land properties, shipbuilding equipment, inventories, as well as eight unfinished container ships with capacity ranging from 1,700 TEU to 5,300 TEU. The buyer's name was not disclosed in the auction. But Singapore's Splash247 understands that the buyer is Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, which is located only 40km away from Ouhua's shipyard. Started off as a ship repair yard, Zhoushan Changhong has developed into a shipbuilding yard with a diversified shipbuilding portfolio in recent years. Currently the shipyard has six 2,700 TEU boxships, six 1,800 TEU boxships and two ultramax bulkers on its orderbook. Last year, China International Marine Containers (CIMC) made a major investment into Zhoushan Changhong as part of an agreement to collaborate on shipbuilding business.    

Vale strengthens cooperation with Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group

Brazil’s Vale and China’s Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to further deepen their cooperation. The MOU will see Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group and Vale seek opportunities on cooperating on the supply of Vale’s iron ore products to Chinese customers. The two parties will also cooperation in the logistics and supply chain sectors. Vale already has a 46-year long commercial partnership with China. Mao Jianhong, party secretary of Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group, said that Shulanghu ore terminal achieved a rapid growth on the iron ore handling volume supported by Vale. The projects calls for the construction of three of the five new container berths, including one 100,000 tonnes-class container berth and two 70,000 tonnes-class berths. The entire Jintang container terminal project consists of two 100,000 tonnes-class container berths and three 70,000 tonnes-class container berths, with a designed annual handling capacity of 2.5 million TEU. The total investment of the project is around CNY6.43 billion (US$931 million), according to Seatrade Maritime News of Colchester, UK. The first phase project for one 100,000 tonnes-class container berth and one 70,000 tonnes-class container berth were completed at the end of 2018. Cosco Shipping Shanghai opens new ship repair yard in Zhoushan

Shanghai Shipping Maritime Technology, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cosco Shipping Shanghai branch, opens up a new ship repair base in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province. Zhao Bangtao, general manager of Cosco Shipping Shanghai said that it established the new ship repair base is part of the company’s business consolidation and optimisation plan. He said it would improve the company’s integrated service capability and efficiency. The company started the construction of the ship repair yard in Liuhengdao, Zhoushan in December 2018. Cosco Shipping Shanghai is a regional company of Cosco Shipping Group, focusing on liquid chemical products transportation and storage. The company will also work with Cosco Shipping Energy Transportation to expand cooperation for the new ship repair yard. Zhoushan is one of the leading ship repair bases in China. The yards in Zhoushan repaired around 2,000 ships last year, accounting for 20% of the nation’s total ship repair volume.

Zhoushan IMC-Yongyue Shipyard enters into Brazilian ship repair market

Chinese shipyard Zhoushan IMC-Yongyue Shipyard and Engineering is moving into the Brazilian ship repair market. The Chinese shipyard is cooperating with Brasil Basin Drydock Company (BBDC) to develop ship repair market in Brazil, and will manage the green ship repair facility for BBDC. BBDC, formed by McQuilling and Promon Engenharia, is to manage the design, construction and operation of an industrial facility that will drydock and repair seagoing merchant vessels. The facility was named as Empresa de Docagens Pedra do Ingá (EDPI), which will be developed into a modern large-scale ship repair yard in the northeast Brazil. According to the Protocol of Intention signed by McQuilling on behalf of BBDC, the government of the state of Paraíba, Brazil, and IMC-Yongyue Shipyard, IMC-Yongyue Shipyard will operate the EDPI facility and employ the same green ship repair principles implemented in its Zhoushan shipyard. Zhoushan IMC-Yongyue Shipyard is a Sino-foreign ship repair and engineering enterprise invested in by IMC Pan Asia Alliance Group, Zhejiang Yongyue Shipping Group, and Zhejiang Haizhongzhou Group.
