Ningbo-Zhoushan port records 23.3m teu of box throughput in 2016

China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port is projected to handle container throughput of 23.3m teu in 2016, an increase of 5% compared to 2015, according to Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group. Box volumes for December 2016 were also posted at approximately 1.74m teu, up 12.7% year-on-year and tallying up the annual figure to 23.3m teu. Shanghai-listed Ningbo Zhoushan Port added that cargo throughput is estimated to grow by 3% year-on-year to 674.36m dwt for 2016. Ningbo port and Zhoushan port completed a merger in September 2015 and assumed the new identity named Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group. The container throughput of the ports are recorded under Ningbo-Zhoushan port, with Ningbo accounting for the majority of volumes.

Cosco Zhoushan yard agrees to defer delivery of bulk carrier by one year

China’s Cosco (Zhoushan) Shipyard has agreed to extend the delivery of a newbuilding bulk carrier by one year at the request of the European shipowner. The delivery date of the bulk carrier will be deferred from the second quarter of 2017 to the second quarter of 2018. “The extension was agreed upon at the request of the European shipowner and taking into account the current unfavaourable market conditions,” said Cosco Corporation (Singapore) Limited, parent of Cosco Shipyard Group which in turn owns the Zhoushan shipyard. “In view of the rescheduling and the uncertainty as to when the shipowners will take delivery of the bulk carrier, it is not possible to ascertain the financial impact of the agreement for rescheduling at this point in time,” Cosco Corp added.

CGM CGM orders four boxships from Cosco Zhoushan

CMA CGM has booked four boxship newbuildings at Cosco (Zhoushan) Shipyard. The pricing of the four 3,300 teu vessels was not revealed Singapore-listed Cosco Corp saying both sides had agreed to keep the price confidential. The boxship newbuilds are due to be delivered between end March and end August 2018.

At around 1:00pm on April 28th, “MOL Earnest” Vessel passed Tiaozhoumen Channel of Ningbo Zhoushan Port and successfully docked at No.1 berth of Meishan Port Area Container Terminal, indicating complete success of first trial voyage to Tiaozhoumen Channel of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the company said in its press release. Tiaozhoumen Channel is located between Xiashi Island and Liuheng Island and is the 2nd largest maritime channel in the core port area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port. Built based on the standard for navigation of 15,000-dwt bulk cargo ships, the main channel has total length of around 22.5 nautical miles and navigation water depth of 17-20m. With the port’s rapid development in transport and production, the traffic pressure of Xiashimen Channel, which is the main channel of the core port area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port has been increased in recent years. In July 2010, Ningbo and Zhoushan city officially launched the construction of Tiaozhoumen Channel and completed construction in the following year. In Oct. 2014, Tiaozhoumen was officially approved and opened for operation and has been officially qualified for trial navigation recently. Prior to the trial navigation, the NGPC and Dalian Maritime University cooperated to carry out the project of “Research on Countermeasures for Pilotage Safety of Tiaozhoumen Channel”, collected relative data, made systematic research and investigation on the topography and hydrological characteristics and provided theoretical basis for pilot navigation. During pilotage navigation, the business department of group company, OPTB,NGPC,MICT and other units cooperated actively with each other to ensure successful completion of the pilot work.

Ningbo-Zhoushan port box throughput up 6.1% in 2015

China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port has posted a 6.1% year-on-year increase in container throughput volumes for 2015, according to the latest figures released by the local authorities. Ningbo-Zhoushan port handled a total throughput of 20.62m teu in 2015, increasing by 6.1% compared to the volumes of 19.44m teu recorded in 2014. The Chinese port authority said Ningbo-Zhoushan port is ranked the world’s fourth busiest container port in 2015, after its volumes surpassed Hong Kong’s 2015 volumes at 20.11m teu. Over the past five years, investments of over RMB420bn ($64bn) have been made to upgrade and further develop the Chinese port, including the construction of iron ore berths that can accommodate the 400,000 dwt valemaxes. In the next five years, the port authority has committed to increase throughput capacity at the port for it to be able to handle up to 32m teu annually. Ningbo port and Zhoushan port have completed a merger in September last year and assumed a new entity named Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group. The container throughput of the ports are recorded under Ningbo-Zhoushan port, with Ningbo accounting for the majority of volumes.

THE port of Ningbo-Zhoushan port in China's eastern Zhejiang province handled a record 20 million TEU last year, ranking it as the fifth busiest port worldwide after Shanghai, Singapore, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The port discharged cargo carried by 118 major vessels from January to November, triple the number compared to the same period in 2014, according to vice president of Ningbo Port Company Limited, Chu Bin, reported Xinhua news agency. The merged port complex has 236 container routes, including those offered by 119 ocean-going shipping lines, and is connected to 600 ports in 100 countries.

Zhoushan port eyes IPO funds to build valemax-sized berths

China’s Zhoushan port is planning to raise RMB614m ($98.9m) from an initial public offering (IPO) as it seeks to construct large-sized berths that are able to accommodate the 400,000-dwt valemaxes. In an announcement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange late last week, Zhoushan port said out of the aimed RMB614m to be raised, RMB522m will be used to fund the construction of the valemax-sized berths at Ningbo-Zhoushan port complex. The remaining RMB92m will be used for general working capital. The port is aiming to complete the construction of one 300,000-dwt berth and one 100,000-dwt berth, established side-by-side so as to cater to a 400,000-dwt vessel as well, by 2015. By 2016, a second 300,000-dwt berth and two 50,000-dwt berths all placed side-by-side, making it another 400,000-dwt berth, will be completed. The Ningbo-Zhoushan port complex, located in the coastal province of Zhejiang, is at the crossroads of the north-south inland and coastal shipping route, making it one of China’s busiest ports. In 2014, Zhoushan port generated a revenue of RMB860m and a profit of RMB183m, improving from the 2013 earnings of RMB840m and RMB157m, respectively.

Cosco Zhoushan lands bulbous bow modification deal for nine boxships

Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard has landed a deal to modify the bulbous bow of nine containerships, bringing its modification orderbook to 18 containerships. The containership bulbous bow modification orders came France’s CMA CGM with eight units and Germany’s NSB with one unit, Cosco Zhoushan announced on its website. To date, the Chinese yard has completed and delivered modifications to bulbous bow of 15 containerships with capacity ranging from 4,250-11,400 teu. Cosco Zhoushan said that according to owners’ feedback, the modified boxships were able to reap fuel savings of up to 6% on average.

Cosco Zhoushan yard expects to boost offshore contract value

China’s Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard is expecting to enlarge its contract value for offshore construction this year compared to the last, reports said. In the first half of 2014, state-owned Cosco Zhoushan clinched six new contracts plus seven options, and a majority of the deals is for offshore work. At present, the Zhejiang province yard is building 13 new ships and nine of them are offshore vessels. The ships under construction include PSVs, FPSOs, oil tankers and pipelay barges. A Cosco Zhoushan official was reported saying that over the course of this year the yard has been looking out for deals in the offshore sector and enhancing its product offerings by moving up the value-chain.

Cosco Zhoushan bags $54m bulk carrier pair

Cosco Shipyard Group has secured a contract to construct two 64,000 dwt bulk carriers, for over $54m. The vessels are will be built at Cosco's Zhoushan Shipyard expected to be delivered to their Asian owner in the fourth quarter of 2014. Last month a European buyer exercised an option for a 64,000 dwt dry bulk vessel at the same yard.
