The southern Chinese ports of Shenzhen and Zhuhai were closed today while port operations in Hong Kong were curtailed for safety reasons as Typhoon Megi was set to hit China's southern coastline late today or early tomorrow, port officials and shipping sources said.In Hong Kong, the government issued the tropical cyclone warning signal No 3 cautioning about sustained winds of 41-62 kph and gusts that may exceed 110 kph, which would require ships to seek shelter immediately."The government has issued signal No. 3 and of course most of the port activities have been shut down. The port is technically not closed but has suspended operations for safety reasons," an official from Hong Kong port's marine traffic control centre told Platts, adding that the port would be totally closed only if the "severe" Signal No. 8 is issued by the government. The official said container movements at the port had been cancelled and the restrictions could stay until Saturday morning.
