China possesses 14 huge ports with annual throughput of over 100 million tonnes, making it the country with most huge ports.

The country has been picking up infrastructure construction, propping up the prosperity of the port industry. More than 1,400 ports have been built, with over 35,000 berths, over 1,200 of which are of over 10,000-tonnge.

Along the coastline, about 5,000 berths have been constructed, with total designed capacity of 3.43 billion tonnes and 61.5 million TEUs annually. These berths take on roughly 90 percent of the mainland's total foreign-trade cargo.

All the ports led by gigantic ones dealt with 6.41 billion tonnes of cargo and 112.7 million TEUs in 2006, up 15.1 percent and 20.4 percent year on year. Both cargo throughput and container throughput crowned the figures of the world for four consecutive years.
