EASTERN China hinterland province Anhui's Bengbu city has started a new container railway service to Shanghai and another to Ningbo since September 18, Xinhua reports. Bengbu was also selected as one of the cities to participate in Shanghai Railway Bureau's cargo business reform scheme. Shanghai will invest CNY200 million (US$32.67 million) on building a "dry port" that will serve as a feeder for Shanghai via sea-rail intermodal service. The CNY200 million will be spent on the development of the freight yard of the Bengbu Southern Railway Station and customs facilities to turn it into an equally significant cargo source for Shanghai as Yangtze River Delta's manufacturing base Yiwu. The new service, which runs every Tuesday and Thursday, will enjoy a larger rate discount of 40 per cent compared to the previous 30 per cent. Bengbu also have set a standard of faster transport time for the service, which will now be less than 20 hours to Shanghai and a round 25 but no more than 30 hours to Ningbo. This is much faster than the previous three to four day transit. In December last year, the first sea-rail intermodal service between Bengbu and Shanghai was launched. Now Bengbu is seizing the opportunity of national cargo railway reform and strength its support to sea-rail intermodal transport. It offers a subsidy of CNY870 per TEU for shipments using sea-rail intermodal. Bengbu has also been in talks with Shanghai Railway Bureau on several occasions to expand the range of services its railway freight station offers so as to make it a more comprehensive logistics facility with network covering the northern Anhui region.

THE 150,000-tonne navigational channel project in Meishan port area at eastern China's Ningbo-Zhoushan port has opened to world's largest containerships of 18,000 TEU, or 150,000 tonnes, to sail on the channel to the port after its completion in the early half next year. Among the berths at Meishan Bonded Port Area's container terminal, No 1 and 2 has been in operation, the rest three will become operational by the end of year. With five berths in operation, the port will have enough capacity to accommodate containerships of 150,000 tonnes. Nos 6 to No 10 berths, which are now built to handle these ships. But the navigational channel at the port area can only allow ships of 100,000 to sail through. Hence the need for further dredging. The project, costing CNY30 million (US44.88 million), will enhance Ningbo-Zhoushan port's container handling capacity and attract more international services, said Xinhua.

Ningbo ascends TEU ladder, poised to unseat Shenzhen as No 2 box port

PostTime:2012-11-20 08:34:46 View:775

NINGBO is poised to unseat Shenzhen as the mainland's second-busiest container port and the world's fourth-busiest, says Willy Lin Sun-mo, chairman of the Hong Kong Shippers' Council. "Ningbo will become one of the major international ports. In fact, it is an international port now," Mr Lin told the Hong Kong's South China Morning Post. In the first nine months this year, Ningbo volume increased 9.9 per cent to 12.3 million TEU while Shenzhen's rose 2.9 per cent to 17.3 million TEU. Meanwhile, Shanghai increased 1.9 per cent to 24.2 million TEU, according to official data. Ningbo's container throughput grew more than eightfold to 14.5 million TEU since 2002, said Ningbo Port president Li Linghong. Ningbo is closer to factories in the Yangtze River Delta than Shanghai, just as Shenzhen is closer to factories in the Pearl River Delta than Hong Kong, Mr Lin said. In container throughput, Ningbo's global ranking climbed to sixth last year from 30th in 2002, he said. "The past 10 years was the period of Ningbo port's most rapid growth." Among the world's 30 largest ports, Ningbo has seen the fastest growth over this 10-year period, said Mr Li. From the funds raised from its IPO in Shanghai in September 2010, Ningbo Port, the city's port operator, will invest CNY10.95 billion (US$2.1 billion) in four terminals from 2010 to 2014, according to the company. One container terminal in Beilun district will receive CNY5.59 billion from 2010 to 2014 and the container terminal of Jintang district will receive CNY1.26 billion from 2010 to 2013. The Beilun and Jintang container terminals will add five million TEU annual container capacity, said the report. The two other terminals to benefit are another container terminal as well as a coal dock. In the past three quarters, CYN12.76 billion was invested in Ningbo port, accounting for 80 per cent of the planned investment for the entire year, according to the Zhoushan government website. Ningbo port includes the port of Zhoushan city, which is next to the original Ningbo harbour. Recently, the bonded zone of Zhoushan port gained 10 investment contracts totalling CNY13 billion, according to the website of the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission. Said Northeast Securities analyst Xiang Xu: "There is a possibility Ningbo may overtake Shenzhen because it has been enjoying fast growth. The question is whether it can sustain its growth. The gap between Ningbo and Shenzhen is still large."

Ningbo Port October box volume up 14.2%

PostTime:2012-11-05 09:01:32 View:835

Ningo Port saw 38.65 million tonnes of goods move through the port in October, up 14.8 percent from a year earlier, while container throughput was 1.41 million TEUs, up 14.2 percent. But container throughput dropped 11 percent in October from a record 1.59 TEUs in September, mainly due to sluggish demand from the United States and the European Union, reported China Daily. Located in the heart of China's container supply centre in the Yangtze River Delta, and driven mainly by demand in the US and the EU, Ningbo's performance in recent years has been impressive during the two months. About 90 percent of the port's container throughput is foreign trade and officials expect 10-percent total annual growth.
