Ningbo starts first sea-rail container intermodal to Jiangxi

AFTER launch of a number of sea-rail container intermodal services from hinterland province Jiangxi to the Port of Ningbo, the first Jiangxi-bound service has been inaugurated.The first run carried 88 TEU, mostly from MSC, OOCL, Yang Ming and KMTC on 44 rail cars. Ningbo Port Southeast Logistics Co Ltd is the operator of the service.The return journey is expected to start February 10. The Ningbo-Jiangxi sea-rail container intermodal service is expected to have carried about 8,000 TEU by the end of this year.Ningbo will develop more non-scheduled sea-rail container service bound for Jiangxi in the future and turn them into scheduled services according to market conditions.Ningbo Port Southeast Logistics promises to devote more efforts on expanding the hinterland markets in Jiangxi and Hunan province.

EASTERN China's Ningbo-Zhoushan port recorded world's fastest year-on-year increase of 10 per cent in its throughput tonnage last year to 570 million tonnes, Xinhua reported. The throughput volume was 50 million tonnes more than 2008's volume, taking up 81.4 per cent in Zhejiang province's sea port throughput total. Throughput of foreign trade cargo amounted to 240 million tonnes, taking up 92.3 per cent of the provincial total. Statistics from the Ningbo port and shipping authority show that there have been nine ships deployed to the Ningbo city's shipping market with an aggregate capacity of 170,000 deadweight tonnes since the beginning of this year. The city's water transportation capacity is estimated to reach four million deadweight tonnes by the end of January.

CONTAINER throughput of eastern China's port of Ningbo fell 9.3 per cent year on year to 855,000 TEU, Logistics Week reported. The port received 913 containership callings in this month, 408 were from ocean shipping lines, contributing 609,000 TEU to its throughput. Near sea feeder line callings amounted to 174, contributing 60,000 TEU. International transit containers totalled to 69,000 tonnes. Throughput went up 5.1 per cent up to 31 million tonnes. Foreign trade cargo climbed 9.3 per cent to 15.1 million tonnes. The local port authority said the negative impact brought by the economic crisis is still haunting the hinterland regions where the port's cargo mostly come from. Foreign trade is still covered in a gloomy mist.

Ningbo Daxie terminal receives three ZPMC super gantry cranes

NINGBO Daxie's China Merchants International Container Terminal (CMICT) has taken delivery of three new twin 40-foot quayside container cranes from Shanghai's ZPMC.Up till now, the number of container cranes at the terminal has increased to 14; five are twin 40-foot quayside cranes.The new cranes each have two spreaders, each could operate two 20-foot or one 40-foot or one 45-foot container a time with a maximum height of 121 metres, a maximum lifting height of 41 metres, an outreach of 63 metres and a rail gauge of 35 metres. They are designed to carry a load up to 65 tons and are capable of handling the world's largest containerships of 23 rows containers across.

Ningbo export container sales surge 64.8pc in 2007

Ningbo's container sales exports in 2007 surged 64.8 per cent over the year before to 226,500 TEU with a 69.5 per cent higher value of US$614 million, Xinhua reported.Hong Kong is the largest export market of these boxes. Last year, Ningbo's exported containers to Hong Kong shot up 160 per cent to 80,100 TEU. The US was the second largest market where 53,200 TEU of Ningbo's container products were exported, down 11.5 per cent. The European Union was the third, buying 49,300 TEU, an increase of 89.7 per cent year on year.Containers exported to the above three places took up 80.6 per cent of the total of Ningbo's box export.

PORTS in Ningbo handled 9.3 million TEU in 2007, a strong growth of 32.2 per cent year on year, Xinhua reported.The terminals in the southeast coastal city handled 23,562 vessels in the past year, up 19.2 per cent, the report said.There are now 190 container services calling ports in Ningbo, including 101 trans-ocean services, 46 near-sea services, 19 feeder services and 24 domestic trade services, the report said.Total cargo volume of Ningbo ports increased 11 per cent to 344 million tonnes, including 158 million tonnes of foreign trade cargo, the report said.Ningbo was ahead of the ports of Guangzhou and Qingdao in both container throughput and cargo throughput. Guangzhou port handled 340 million tonnes and 9.14 million TEU and Qingdao port handled 260 million tonnes and 9.3 million TEU, the report added.

Samsung Heavy Industries launches Phase 2 of Ningbo terminal

THE 2nd phase terminal of Samsung Heavy Industries (Ningbo) has been open to vessels since it passed check and inspection by the authority in December, 2007, Xinhua reported.The terminal was part of the dock yard expansion project of Samsung Heavy Industries (Ningbo) and it's the only terminal for handling giant vessel parts in Ningbo, the report said.The new terminal, including two 5,000 tonne berths with quay length of 370 metres, is expected to handle 150,000 tons a year, the report said.Construction of the terminal, started in September of 2004, was completed in April of 2006 and had handled 88 vessels during its trial operation before it was officially open, the report said.

Ningbo Port expects over 10m TEUs this year

The Port of Ningbo in Zhejiang province in the eastern China expects to handle container throughput of over ten million TEUs in 2008, says Tong Mengda, chief economist of Ningbo Port Group.The railway, highway, and shipping and aviation infrastructure have improved the overall logistics environment of Ningbo. Tong anticipates the container throughput to reach 10.6 million TEUs and the cargo throughput to achieve 360 million tonnes in 2008. The port records a container throughput of over nine million TEUs until December 28. The figure is 31 percent higher than the whole-year container throughput in 2006. The port retains to have the largest growth among all major coastal ports in China for seven years straight. The new container throughput may help the port obtain the 11th position, up from the 13th, in the global ranking.

NINGBO-ZHOUSHAN port handled 8.60 million TEU in the first 11 months of 2007, a strong growth of 32.1 per cent year on year, Xinhua reported.Ningbo-Zhoushan port was on the heels of Qingdao port, which handled 8.65 million TEU, but ahead of Guangzhou port that handled 8.39 million TEU during the 11 months, the report said.The three ports are the second-tier container ports in China right behind the front-tier harbours of Shanghai and Shenzhen.Statistics from Ningbo port authority show cargo volume of Ningbo-Zhoushan port increased 14 per cent to 437.2 million tons, ranking second in China after Shanghai's 448.6 million tons.In November alone, Ningbo-Zhoushan port handled 42.33 million tons, surpassing Shanghai's 1.03 million tons.
