Ningbo-Zhoushan port box throughput up 6.1% in 2015

China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port has posted a 6.1% year-on-year increase in container throughput volumes for 2015, according to the latest figures released by the local authorities. Ningbo-Zhoushan port handled a total throughput of 20.62m teu in 2015, increasing by 6.1% compared to the volumes of 19.44m teu recorded in 2014. The Chinese port authority said Ningbo-Zhoushan port is ranked the world’s fourth busiest container port in 2015, after its volumes surpassed Hong Kong’s 2015 volumes at 20.11m teu. Over the past five years, investments of over RMB420bn ($64bn) have been made to upgrade and further develop the Chinese port, including the construction of iron ore berths that can accommodate the 400,000 dwt valemaxes. In the next five years, the port authority has committed to increase throughput capacity at the port for it to be able to handle up to 32m teu annually. Ningbo port and Zhoushan port have completed a merger in September last year and assumed a new entity named Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group. The container throughput of the ports are recorded under Ningbo-Zhoushan port, with Ningbo accounting for the majority of volumes.

THE port of Ningbo-Zhoushan port in China's eastern Zhejiang province handled a record 20 million TEU last year, ranking it as the fifth busiest port worldwide after Shanghai, Singapore, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The port discharged cargo carried by 118 major vessels from January to November, triple the number compared to the same period in 2014, according to vice president of Ningbo Port Company Limited, Chu Bin, reported Xinhua news agency. The merged port complex has 236 container routes, including those offered by 119 ocean-going shipping lines, and is connected to 600 ports in 100 countries.

THE Ningbo-Zhoushan port in east China's Zhejiang province handled a record 20 million TEU in 2015, ranking it as the fifth port globally to exceed annual container throughput of 20 million TEU, following the ports of Shanghai, Singapore, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. According to vice president of Ningbo Port Co. Ltd, Chu Bin, Ningbo-Zhoushan port discharged cargo of 118 major vessels from January to November, triple the number compared to the same period last year, reported Xinhua news agency. Ningbo Ocean Shipping buys 4 x 1,000-TEU box ships from Chinese shipyard

NINGBO Ocean Shipping has ordered four 1,000-TEU containerships from Taizhou Kouan Shipbuilding that are scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2017 and will be classified by the China Classification Society (CCS). Kouan Shipbuilding announced the deal on its website but did not disclose the financial details, reported Seatrade Maritime News. The Chinese shipbuilder constructs box ships with a capacity ranging from 1,000 TEU to 4,350 TEU, as well as dry bulk carriers, multi-purpose vessels and heavylift vessels.

CONTAINER spot rates last week from China's port of Ningbo to Europe, West Mediterranean, and East Mediterranean declined on average by 13 per cent, 22 per cent, and nine per cent respectively. However, the rates increased by 13 per cent to destinations in the Middle East, according to the Ningbo Shipping Exchange. The weekly Ningbo Containerised Freight Index, which is now publishing its figures on the London-headquartered Baltic Exchange due to a new cooperation agreement, covers the movement of TEU, FEU and high cube containers and is a composite of the three box types. The index covers Ningbo to East Mediterranean (Piraeus and Istanbul), West Mediterranean (Barcelona, Valencia, Genoa), Europe (Hamburg and Rotterdam) and the Middle East (Dammam and Dubai), reported Lloyd's Loading List. It is based on transactional data from business conducted by a panel of 11 Ningbo-based freight forwarders on Ningbo Exchange's e-trading platform and factors in various surcharges including bunkers, port congestion, peak season and Suez Canal fees.  

MITT docks MCC Transport ship on Shanghai-Ningbo-Yangon loop

YANGON's Myanmar International Terminals Thilawa (MITT) has announced the arrival of the 1,114-TEU Frisia Alster, MCC Transport's on its new service to the terminal.  This weekly service from Maersk's intra-Asia specialist, is deployed on the Intra-Asia 5 (IA5) on a Shanghai, Ningbo, Yangon rotation.  It is MCC Transport's first China-Myanmar direct service to be deployed to meet growing demand between China and the ASEAN region. "This service underlines the fact that MITT has now started to attract both shipping lines and shippers in terms of capability and location," said MITT general manager Min Kyi said.  "We provide swift and efficient services close to industrial zones in the northern and eastern parts of Yangon City as well as the increasing number of factories in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) just across from the terminal," he said. MITT has a total berth length of 1,000 metres, nine metres alongside and a 75 hectares of yard space. It is equipped with tow quay cranes, two mobile harbour cranes and 80 trucks.  It also offers warehousing and container freight station (CFS) facilities.  

Ningbo Port’s former president investigated for corruption

China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) has started investigations on alleged corruption activities by Xu Huajiang, former president of Ningbo Port. In a brief statement on Monday, CCDI said Xu is investigated for “serious violation of the law”, which typically means corruption. It added that Xu is assisting with the investigation. Xu’s stint at Ningbo Port was short as he was appointed in February last year but he resigned in March this year. Last month, CCDI also started a probe on Gao Baoyu, president of Yingkou Port, for allegations of corruption. The Chinese government has been taking a tough stance on corruption and there have been several cases of malpractices among shipping executives and investigations into state-owned shipping groups. CCID has also recently investigated China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and China Shipping Group.

  It has turned out that Samsung Heavy Industries (Ningbo) Co., Ltd., Samsung Heavy Industries’ Ningbo corporate in China, successfully delivered ‘Active’, the first vessel among product carrier (PC) series constructed for Greek shipowner Capital Maritime & Trading, on March 31.   Construction of the 50,000 dwt vessel measuring 183m in length with 32.2m in width begun in March, 2014.   Samsung (Ningbo) is scheduled to finish construction of the eight same-sized PCs in total which were awarded from the Greek owner by the end of 2016. Among them, three vessels are reportedly under construction.   It is said that newbuilding contract value of the eight vessels surpasses CNY 1bn (around $161m) in total.    The second vessel will be launched on April 22 and finishing work for the third and fourth ones has been carried out favorably. While the first vessel ‘Active’ has been delivered successfully, Samsung (Ningbo) reportedly plans to start construction of the fifth vessel soon.   The eight PCs are the first newbuildings the yard won from non-Korean shipowner.   Meanwhile, the yard delivered 17,000 dwt ‘Ningbo 1’ to S&P Marine without any problem in May, 2013, which is Samsung (Ningbo)’s firstly built heavy-lift carrier. Later, Samsung (Ningbo) has continuingly improved its construction capacity and now, it is capable of building four vessels at the same time.

Ningbo claims fifth place among world busiest box ports, edging out Busan

CHINA's Port of Ningbo has surpassed the 20 million TEU mark that means that it is now the world's fifth busiest container port ahead of Korea's Busan. Busan Port Authority said its target for 2014 was 18.2 million TEU, but for the first nine months the South Korean port handled only 13.7 million TEU. Ningbo port, China's fastest growing, said this year's throughput was 16.5 per cent more than the number of containers handled in 2001. Today, Ningbo has 228 container routes and is now able to handle megaships after recent developments to upgrade its natural deepwater berths. Its trade with Taiwan has also experienced sharp growth in 2014.

THE Port of Ningbo has posted a 12 per cent year-on-year increase in container throughput to 16.9 million TEU from January to November 25, making it the fastest growing port in China, reports IHS Maritime 360 Last year, Ningbo posted throughput of 16.8 million TEU, ranking it third among Chinese ports and sixth in the world. According to Ningbo Port Group, the port's dedication to expanding container transport from northern and its efforts to promote sea-rail movement to inland provinces such as Jiangxi and Xinjiang drove its growth. The port handled 110,000 TEU via sea-rail as of November 25, an increase of 20.3 per cent year on year, and its sea-rail throughput is expected to reach 130,000 TEU for full year 2014. Ningbo Port Group president Xu Jianghua said the port planned to invest CNY4 billion (US$650 million) to develop its sea-rail transport. The port operates 277 container services, including 113 international routes, and is projected to handle a total of 18 million TEU in 2014.  

Ningbo Marine gets $5.8m subsidy for ship scrapping

Ningbo Marine has received RMB35.6m ($5.8m) in government subsidy for the scrapping of two elderly dry bulk carriers. The Shanghai-listed company announced on Tuesday that the vessels sent for demolition were the 52,670 dwt Ming Zhou 29 and Ming Zhou 30, both close to 30 years old. Ningbo has received the subsidy in full last Friday from Ningbo city’s financial bureau. In September this year, Ningbo Marine spent RMB510m to purchase three new 50,000 dwt bulkers from a domestic shipyard as part of its fleet renewal plan.

Ningbo on track to push Busan from number 5 spot in world port ranking

NINGBO-Zhoushan port in eastern China's Zhejiang province handled 1.7 million TEU in September and is now positioned to knock out Korea's Busan as the world's No 5 container port. In the first eight months of the year Ningbo's throughput amounted to 14.8 million TEU, an increase of 12 per cent year on year. By comparison, Busan port handled 12.2 million TEU from January to August, an increase of 3.4 per cent compared to the same period in 2013. The results indicate that Ningbo port is on track to over take Busan to become the world's fifth largest port by the end of the year.  The world's top port, Shanghai, reported a throughput of three million TEU in September, down three per cent compared to the preceding month, reported London's Port Technology International.  The world's second biggest container port, Shenzhen, handled 2.2 million TEU in September, lower than August's 2.24 million TEU, which represented an increase of 29.5 per cent year on year.
